The Seven Bridges Valley Walk from Studley Royal

A very pleasant walk from Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal near Ripon, about three miles, and on well defined bridleways and footpaths, a walk well worth seeking out. You’ll walk along and over the meandering River Skell with its cascades and pools, through ancient woods and spy sculptures and monuments. The Seven Bridges Valley walk, although there are only five bridges now, is an interesting walk. Set off from the car park at Studley Park or from the Fountains Abbey Visitor Centre for a longer walk if you prefer.

Please do, as usual, plan your route beforehand, although it is well marked, take snacks and drinks and wear appropriate clothing and footwear. It can get a little muddy if the weather has been inclement.

We approached Studley Royal car park from the village of Studley Roger leaving the B6265 from Ripon and drove along the long driveway through the deer park. A lovely drive along here, you’re always sure to see the deer, always a treat. Park and pay at the car park and wander down to the lake. Turn left away from Fountains Abbey, north east, and walk round the lake to the lake outfall and to the first bridge with Sphinx statues either side. Continue on, enjoy exploring here, until you come to the last, the fifth bridge, and gates which lead out of the estate. You are now entering into what were formerly the Chinese Gardens. Carry on following the path until you come to a long and narrow green footbridge on your right. Over the footbridge, up the hill and turn right then through the woods always keeping the wall on your right hand side. Soon Mackershaw Lodge will appear, a stone building with archway. Past here, down the slope and soon the first bridge you went over will be in sight. Over and soon back to your vehicle.

Brilliant café by the lake or wander into the grounds of Fountains Abbey to explore some more, a lovely peaceful place to spend some time within.

All our cottages are well within travelling distance of Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal. The Hay Loft, to sleep two, and Cobblestone Cottage, to sleep three, being just a couple of miles away. Call me, Nadine, or my daughter Joanne, on 01969 663559 for friendly help and advice and book over the telephone or, of course, do book online if you prefer.
