Cottage

Description

On the fringes of this ancient but compact city is a small hamlet absorbed into the city suburbs with adjacent meadows and woodland reaching out to the River Laver. The immediate area has been recognised as a Conservation Area since 1994 and forms an exceptional architectural enclave in character and form. Tucked quietly behind Bishopton Cottage is The Hay Loft, a modern but cosy conversion of an original barn dating back to 1635. A striking little cottage cloaked with privacy but so near to the City, the wonderful Dales and Vales and only a scenic walk away from the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Studley Royal Park and Fountains Abbey. Travel a little further afield to Harrogate, the Himalyan Gardens, RHS Harlow Carr, Masham, Thirsk.

Access to the cottage is along a private road to a small courtyard with ample space for parking. Entry is from the courtyard to a compact kitchen with laminate floor, sparkling Victorian tiles and everything needed to prepare that special meal for two. The kitchen is open to the adjacent lounge with flagged hearth, wood-burning stove and intimate dining area. French windows open from the lounge to a private walled patio which is the perfect place to enjoy the late morning and afternoon sunshine. A stairway rises from the corner of the lounge to a king-size bedroom and en-suite shower room with washbasin and toilet. Both the bedroom and shower room rise to the rafters and have skylights though the bedroom also has an occluded window.

The joy of the cottage is in the detail, an ideal place for two, intimate, thoughtfully designed and completed with loving care. An historical building but very modern in its conception including energy efficiency and the must-have features of modern life.

Ripon

Ripon is one of the smallest and oldest cities in England, situated by the River Ure on the fringe of the Vale of York. Visit the cathedral, enjoy the Spa Gardens and sample the delights from the pubs, cafes and restaurants. Nearby is the World Heritage Site of Studley Royal and Fountains Abbey to enchant all who visit and the not too distant Yorkshire Dales to be awed and captivated by. A small city with a great Yorkshire heart.

A perfect cottage for 2 - every detail has been thought of to make this cottage a lovely welcoming home for guests. The owners live next door and are willingly available should you need them - but are completely unobtrusive. Can very highly recommend.

We loved our stay in this wonderful, cosy and very comfortable house. Nothing was missed and Ripon and it`s surroundings are worth a travel. Our special thanks go to Katharine and Pete and Ann who really made our stay memorable! They are the kindest and most helpful people. We will surely come back! What a great place to come home, after a day of exploring beautiful Yorkshire! See you! Stefanie and Stefan from Ludwigshafen, Germany.

From the warm greeting to the lovely Welcome Basket - from the comfort and cosiness of the cottage to its lovely setting - the Hay Loft has been our "go to" cottage for a long time - and long may it be so!

Excellent place to stay for a visit to a very interesting, small Yorkshire city. Very comfortable little cottage with lots of facilities and a superb welcome package (home made brownies ... very nice). The cottage is within walking distance of Ripon city centre, and when you find the footpaths along-side the river you can get to the minster on a traffic free route. The walk from the cottage to Fountains Abbey (National Trust) is also recommended. Great place to stay.

We had a wonderful week staying at the Hay Loft. The apartment is incredibly well equipped, with everything you could need and is situated in Historic Bishopton, just a 10 mins walk from Ripon town centre. It's very cosy, with central heating throughout and a great log burner. Also has a superb bathroom. The place is nicely tucked away in a very beautiful section of Bishopton, which makes it extremely quiet. You get your own parking area, just outside the Hay Loft front door. We got a great welcome pack of cakes, chocolate, milk and a nice elderflower sparling drink, after the owners found out we didn't drink. This is a great place to stay, with really lovely hosts. Would highly recommend.

Tucked away in its own private space, it’s a beautiful cottage that is well equipped. Katherine is very friendly and easy to contact if needed. The welcome pack was a lovely touch with homemade cakes that were absolutely delicious. The location is excellent, an easy walk into ripon and easily accessible to fountains abbey Would definitely recommend

My husband and I booked early in the year and was so happy we did. If you are looking for a hidden gem then The Hay Loft is for you. Perfectly situated it took just 15 minutes to get to Harrogate. The Hay Loft is small but not too small and you certainly do not feel constricted. It has all you need for a special getaway. Lots of walks from the door. Ripon is just a couple of miles away and you can get anything you need. Katherine and Pete were so very welcoming and friendly and make you feel so at home from the start, with a dab welcome basket. Highly recommend a stay and we would certainly go back. Jackie & Chris, Darwen. X

The Hay Loft was a lovely place to stay in Ripon. We were most comfortable, and everything we could need was provided. The owners had left lovely items to start us off, and offered advice when needed. The weather was not perfect, but we enjoyed local walks, and visits to Ripon Cathedral and Fountains Abbey. We hope to return before too long.

An absolute gem of a cottage. Comfortable, spotlessly clean and really well equipped and laid out. The most generous welcome pack I have ever had and I really appreciated the extra touches like Sky and Alexa - a real home from home. Lovely sunny courtyard was perfect for enjoying a glass of wine (and for the dog to potter). Private parking right outside was really convenient. The hosts are lovely and very helpful. I loved my week in Yorkshire and the Hay Loft was the perfect, comfy base for lots of walking (great walks from the door as well as further afield). Thanks!

What a gem the Hay Loft is! A wonderful cosy hideaway close to Ripon town centre but with walks from the doorstep. Beautifully kept and presented, with a plentiful supply of logs for the fire. We only had a short break, but it was wonderful. Many thanks indeed to Katharine and Pete - a great place to stay!

The Hay Loft is comfortable, home from home with everything you need including a thoughtful welcome pack and fresh flowers in every room. Katharine and Pete were very friendly and on hand should we have needed anything - which we didn't. The location is excellent, with easy access by foot to Ripon and you can also walk to Studley Royal / Fountain's Abbey (with useful walking instructions providdr). We ate in some excellent restaurant's and coffee shops in Ripon and can highly recommend Manchego, Storehouse Kitchen, Realitea and Oliver's Cafe. We were also able to visit a range of local attractions including Grassington, Thirsk and Helmsley. Overall a wonderful break and we'd highly recommend.

We stayed at the Hay Loft for 3 nights in March 2022. The owners contacted us a few days ahead of our stay, making sure everything was in order. They couldn't have been more helpful on arrival and even offered us breakfast on the morning of our departure, an offer we couldn't unfortunately take up. The Hay Loft itself is small, but has everything you need as a base for exploring and walking in Yorkshire. The small kitchen has everything you need to have breakfast or cook an evening meal. The bed is very comfortable (not always the case in cottages) and the bedroom has plenty of storage and a good ensuite. The open plan downstairs works well and having a parking spot directly outside is a plus. The Hay Loft is in a lovely, quiet part of Ripon, with no traffic noise or the like. It is about a 15 minute walk into the centre of Ripon, where you'll find amongst other things a Booths supermarket and a few nice pubs and restaurants. Overall, a really nice place to base yourself for a short break.

This was the best holiday cottage we have stayed in for comfort cleanliness and location. Having parking right outside the cottage was a real bonus. Walked into Ripon in about 15 mins, which had plenty of places to eat. Pete the owner was very welcoming and friendly and told us to get to Patel Bridge and Fountains Abbey. Look forward to staying again in the future and highly recommend this cosy little retreat, ideal for two. Aug 2021
