Peaceful village of Preston under Scar near Leyburn in Wensleydale in the Yorkshire Dales

Have you ever been to Preston under Scar? It’s not a village you would go through as the main routes bypass the village to the north and to the south. If you haven’t been its time to take a detour and have a little look!

A walk of footbridges, footpaths, moorland, woods, stunning views and the River Cover in Coverdale

A very different walk for me the other day, I’ve probably said it before but I’m amazed at how many footpaths I haven’t walked so close to home. Thinking myself as a bit a walker it can come as a bit of a shock sometimes although extremely enjoyable finding and exploring new ones.

Brymore Ice Cream parlour, a lovely walk on a sunny afternoon in the Yorkshire Dales

Our little family all decided to meet at Brymor Ice Cream Parlour at High Jervaulx near Masham, have a walk and then finish with one of their super ice creams. We parked at Brymor, plenty of parking and all socially spaced, donned boots and hats etc and set off for a walk just less than five miles, mostly easy going.

Saturday morning at the market in Masham in the glorious Yorkshire Dales and Nidderdale AONB

It seemed an awful long time since I was last in Masham this Saturday. Geoff and I had gone down to Masham to be with Joanne and the grandchildren in our little ‘bubble’ and Joanne and I decided to have a wander up into town to have a look at the market

Thorpe Perrow Arboretum near Bedale in Lower Wensleydale

Over thirty years ago would be the is first time I visited the Arboretum at Thorpe Perrow, in my ignorance I didn’t even know what an arboretum was! It was a WI trip, an evening event, a summer evening I suppose, but remember it was cold and not at all sunny but was still very impressed with what I saw even then.

The Excitement of Steppingstones in the glorious Yorkshire Dales

A few weeks ago Geoff, my husband, and I did a short walk, nearly three miles, from Cover Bridge along the river bank in the direction of Middleham in Wensleydale in the Yorkshire Dales. The walk I’ll recount below.

Perhaps a little inspiration for the beginning of June

Felt this poem by Brooke Hampton was one that everyone could relate to whether just for right now or at other less scary times. Hope you enjoy and do take some inspiration from it.

The Advent of Summer in the glorious Yorkshire dales

The house martins arrived in Wensleydale during the first week in May, it may have been late April, at least we thought they had but it was a false alarm. The migrants we saw were not for us, merely passers-by having a short rest before continuing further north.

Poem written in 1869 by Kathleen O’Mara

To start the month of May thought perhaps we could ponder a little more on our situation but also remember what has happened before. Came across this poem written in 1869, which was reprinted during the Spanish Flu Pandemic of 1919, and written by Kathleen O’Mara.

Bolton Castle in Wensleydale in the glorious Yorkshire Dales

When I was little, many years ago, we often used to visit Bolton Castle. For me it was a magical place, the stuff of stories, exciting, fearful, daring and I also think that is where I started with vertigo! We would scamper up the winding stones steps
