If you’re into ancient history, and even if you’re not, you’ll enjoy exploring the abbeys and castles found in the dales. A favourite of Joanne’s and family is Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Deer Park near Ripon which is a stunning World Heritage site with café and gift shop.
You could spend all day here wandering the footpaths, gazing on the now ruined structure as to what and who might have been. For lesser structures make a day of exploring them all! Jervaulx Abbey and Tea Room with Brymor Ice cream just up the road, Coverham Abbey near Middleham, Easby Abbey just outside Richmond. A little further away is Bolton Abbey a lovely drive down Wharfedale from Wensleydale
Castles too, Bolton Castle near Leyburn completed in 1399, offering groups tours, falconry experiences & a tearoom serving lunch. Middleham Castle, also near Leyburn, is an imposing 12th-century castle and childhood palace of Richard III, with a shop and exhibition centre. Richmond Castle with views over the dales, secluded 'cockpit' garden and interactive history exhibition. Ripley Castle, on the way to Harrogate, a privately occupied country Baronet's seat, open for events and tours of the house and grounds all have their own history to discover.
Get lost in the history of this beautiful area and enjoy!
