The Curious Merchant….. when you think about it it could mean anything, perhaps a pub, a traveller selling curious items, a restaurant, a shop it is though. The Curious Merchant has to be one of my favourite shops in Masham which is found on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales and Nidderdale AONB. Housed in a beautiful Georgian Grade II listed building located in the market square, you’ll find the rooms just bursting with all things vintage, antique, French, some useful and some not so but just made for gazing upon, unusual always, large, small, interesting, unique, intriguing.
Alison James has an interesting background, seemingly starting out on her creative path at a very young age, at one point living in France where she became a Patisserie Chef which led on to her joining a touring catering crew in the Rock ‘n’ Roll business where she travelled the world. After thirty three years of travelling she went to London and eventually came to rest in Masham creating this wonderful space for us to enjoy and to take treasures back home with us to keep, or if you can bare to, to make gifts for someone.
Do visit The Curious Merchant website to read about Alison’s life, which sounds very interesting and her journey which led her to Masham.
Happy shopping!
