Pateley Bridge in wondrous Nidderdale AONB, a must visit whilst you’re here!

Share

Pateley Bridge is a small market town perched on a steep sided valley in the wonderful Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Beauty. There has been a settlement on this site since the 12th century and very picturesquely straddles the River Nidd. Half an hours drive from Harrogate, Ripon and Masham, a welcoming town boasting the Oldest Sweet Shop, some say, in the world, which was established in 1827, but the building itself dates back to 1661! Look out for the lintel above the door to prove it.

Pubs, restaurants, cafes, even a little theatre all await to delight you. Visit the Nidderdale Museum, there is history galore here to peruse. Many walks radiate from the town and you can start the Nidderdale Way from here, a circular route of some 53 miles. Venture further into Nidderdale and you’ll find tiny villages just waiting to be explored. Both Stump Cross Caverns and How Stean Gorge are less than 7 miles away, Brimham Rocks even closer. If walking to Brimham Rocks you must go via Panorama Walk. Go up the High Street, past Old Church Lane, continue round to the right staying on the B6265, after a few yards you will see a finger post off to the left indicating Panorama Walk on the Six Dales Trail. It’s very steep going but well worth the effort on a good day.

If visiting in September the Nidderdale Show is a must, the last Dales agricultural show of the year is quite an event. A visit to The Coldstones Cut is an essential part of any visit to Nidderdale, one that is on our own ‘to visit’ list! Perched on Greenhow Hill above Pateley Bridge, the sculpture offers spectacular views over the landscape of Nidderdale reaching as far as the Vale of York and York Minster. A massive construction where you can freely walk and explore. Sounds amazing!

We have cottages in Ripon and Masham, and in between. Look on website for ideas or call me Nadine or my daughter Joanne on 01969 663559 for friendly help and advice. We very much look forward to hearing from you soon!
