Circular Walk from West Witton in Wensleydale

What a lovely walk the other day, easy going, panoramic views, river side walking, wildlife, seemed to have everything going for it. Start from West Witton in Wensleydale, we parked in the large layby on the east side of the village by the A684. 

Walk up to the bus stop and take the track to the right. Quickly leave this and take the footpath to the right. Continue on until the walled section finishes through a couple more fields then veer round to the left to join the footpath coming from Wensley. Don’t forget to look over to the right to see Polly Peacham’s Tower .

Look through the trees to see Bolton Castle and Bolton Hall. We set up a huge flock of Canada geese, what a honking! If you venture along here in late spring there are always oyster catchers with their loud calls. Mallards are forever present, fieldfares twittering in the trees at this time of year, the odd rabbit and you may even catch a glimpse of a deer. The river is never very far away and if you’ve time go and look at Redmire Force before retracing your steps a little way and turning south to take you to Swinithwaite and Berry’s Farm Shop for a well earned ‘cuppa’ and whatever else takes your fancy.

When refreshed cross the A684 and take the lane toward Morpeth Gate but turn east part way up the concrete road to walk along Langthwaite Lane which brings you out at Chantry in West Witton. Just sensational views on this stretch, sit a while and soak it all in. Make you way back down to the main road, past the Wensleydale Heifer and the Fox and Hounds and a little way further on back to your vehicle.

In all just over six miles. Not a full days walk but long enough for some. Of course you can always take a longer route if you so wish. Don’t forget to plan your route, take your map with you and always wear suitable clothing and footwear. Enjoy!
