Now firstly before you start to read about the route please be aware that there are lots of stiles on this walk, not very often there aren’t any at all but this has a lot, we all commented on it! Other than that a really great walk with wonderful views up Coverdale to Little Whernside and Greater Whernside. Not too strenuous with a distance of just over seven miles. As always please plan your route beforehand and take the map with you. Appropriate clothing and footwear should be worn and don’t forget to pack drinks and food.
Park your car in the village hall car park if there’s space, don’t forget to pop something in the honesty box, otherwise street parking. From the village hall walk into the playing field by the right of the building and pick up the first stile on the right. Follow the stiles through the fields to the road making sure you come out onto the road to West Scrafton. Continue to Nathwaite Bridge and immediately over the bridge take a right turn, after a few yards follow the finger post to the left up the rise to a stile. From here follow the footpath to Swineside, go through Swineside keeping the last buildings of the village on your right to pick up the footpath taking you up Rampshaw Bank and then down to Hindlethwaite Hall. Over the little wooden Bridge and just on your left is the perfect place to stop for a breather overlooking the River Cover. When rested walk along the river side in the direction of Gammersgill. Once in Gammersgill follow the road in the direction of Carlton and after the last house follow the footpath to the left, there is a finger post here. Up the hill and here you have a choice, make it a little longer and go off to the left or straight on and round to the left of the wood. Follow until you come out on the footpath to Fleensop in the west. Turn right and continue until you pick up the track which takes you back to Carlton and your vehicle.
