West Burton to West Burton in a Circular Manner

West Burton to Newbiggin and back

This is a route so well walked by me and many others too, just love it, and it’s perfect for a stroll out or a more energetic walk, just whatever, as always. About two miles and easy going to Newbiggin in Bishopdale and back in a circular manner.

As always, even though only two miles, plan your route, take map and GPS, wear appropriate footwear and clothing, and as always take with you drinks and snacks. There’ll be plenty of opportunities to sit and wonder at the beautiful scenery and perhaps ponder on life as you go along so why not a bit of munching as well.

Park in West Burton wherever you can and head up the village in a south westerly direction, pass the village hall on your left and soon West Burton House on your right, a few yards further on you’ll see a footpath off to the right. Take this and walk up hill, straight along through the field, through the next stile then down, down the grassy slope to the next stile, through here, turn left, over the stone bridge and stream, quite dry now after all this amazing weather, and head south west again. From here follow the stiles through the fields. I’ve picked elderflowers along here to make into cordial, delicious and no car fumes to worry about. You eventually come to a track, there is an awkward gate, lift it or climb over. I always wish the farmers would fix it but …….  Keep going along the track until you come to a stile on your left with a couple of steps and near a gate at Grid Ref: SE 00336 85819. If you would like to you can walk further along the track to Newbiggin and explore but come back to this point to proceed. Once through the stile it’s diagonally up hill to the first stile and more or less walking east on the next level up from where you were. Again follow the stiles and come out at Town Head Farm at the top of West Burton Grid Ref: SE 01488 86387. Just wonderful on here, looking over Wensleydale to Pen Hill, Thoralby, Bolton Castle, Redmire in the distance. For a while  you walk by a little stream, loads of wild flowers everywhere.

At Town Head Farm, crest the hill, rejoin the road and enjoy the views walking down West Burton, I never tire of this view, wonderful. Picnic on the green anyone? Perfect! Don’t forget to wander down to look at Cauldron Falls. Do come and stay in one of our beautiful Country Hideaways holiday cottages and enjoy this walk and many others in the dales. Call me, Nadine, or my daughter Joanne, on 01969 663559 for friendly help and advice and to book over the telephone or, of course, do book online if you prefer.

Joanne and I are looking forward to hearing from you!
