Wensleydale to the east of the Yorkshire Dales is a wide, generous, graceful dale. Some may say majestic, some beautiful, some green and verdant, interesting, forever changing. But of course it is all of these things. Spend some time here and you’ll never run out of surprises, some just a small pang, others a tear jerking WOW.
I’ve lived here for over fifty years, coming for longer, and even now there are corners which I’m still finding that I had no idea were there. Endless footpaths to follow or tour the roads, use the Little White Bus, cycle. I was coming over from Swaledale yesterday by way of Grinton to go down into Redmire and the view…. I just had to stop and drink it all in and I’m thinking ‘You live here!’.
Hawes to the west is always worth visit, go to the Wensleydale Creamery, be enthralled at the Auction Mart when the sheep sales are on, browse the shops, children will love the playground, lunch in the pubs or cafes. At the other end of the dale is Leyburn, stroll the market place with shops, cafes and pubs, walk along the Shawl for the most stunning views, then on to Bedale and don’t’ forget to explore all the little villages in between.
Bolton Castle, Middleham Castle, Newby Hall, Fountains Abbey to the far, far east by Ripon, Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Beauty. Numerous church’s all with their own story to tell. But just to walk the hills and the valley of Wensleydale can by such an experience whether a stroll by the River Ure, Walden Beck, Aysgarth Falls, Hardrow Force or to scale the heights of Penhill, Addlebrough, Wether Fell can just bring me to tears with the wonderous views.
I’ve just skirted around some of the sights of Wensleydale but come and explore this beautiful dale for yourselves. As I write this morning the sky is as clear as can be, a bit of a nip in the air, a precursor to autumn, and I’m looking forward to walking up Walden with friends later and I just know we will enjoy and be stunned with the views and what we see along the way.
