On another beautiful autumn morning we set off from Ivelet Bridge in Swaledale to complete a walk of over four miles in the direction of Muker, quite easy going apart from one very little hill. The views were quite lovely, up the dale and down the dale. Ivelet Bridge is a narrow, semi-circular arch stone bridge spanning the river Swale, dating from the late 17th century and reputed to be haunted by a headless dog!
Although a short walk as always please pack your rucksack with water and snacks to keep you going, plan your route beforehand and take map, GPS, compass and anything else you feel you might need. Wear appropriate clothing and footwear.
We travelled along the B6270, the main road through Swaledale, and turned for Ivelet. Soon the bridge comes into view, we parked under the trees on the main road side of the bridge. Over the bridge, so pretty, spend some time looking at the bridge from different angles and take the path to your left, west, just over the bridge, OS Grid Ref: SD 93598 97960. A well worn path takes you along the river Swale, there were lots of mallards in the river on our morning, just joyous to watch. It’s quite well signposted but keep an eye on your map or GPS. Soon there is a sign inviting you go look at a barn, in its, sort of, original state, so do have a peep. Back to the path, following the signs, pass the pretty cottages on your right at Ramps Holme and soon Ramps Holme foot bridge comes into view. You have a decision to make here. Go over the bridge and walk down into Muker to explore or continue on past. We went past, after a few yards you’ll come to a track, turn right, east, onto here.
Follow the track soon to change to a single track road, keep going past Calvert Houses and Gunnerside Lodge down into the village of Ivelet. Although it’s a couple of miles to Ivelet we met only one vehicle, so very pleasant walking. Just a few houses in Ivelet but really pretty and they still have their own red telephone box! Continue down the hill along the road which brings you back to Ivelet Bridge and your vehicle.
Come and stay in one of our beautiful Country Hideaways holiday cottages and enjoy this walk, along with many others of course. Call me, Nadine, or my daughter Joanne, on 01969 663559 to book over the telephone and for friendly help and advice or, of course, do book online if you prefer.
Hear from you really soon!
