On a very pleasant morning last week we set off for Bedale to enjoy the riches of Thorp Perrow Arboretum. We were unsure whether the winds of the previous week would have cleared all the leaves off the trees but we needn’t have worried, the colours were just beautiful and made even more so by fallen leaves beneath as if a mirror image to the magnificence above.
First stop, of course, was coffee and cake in a very pleasant tearoom open daily which offers sandwichs, soup, lunches, an appropriate children’s menu, cakes and hot and cold drinks. Much refreshed and having the studied the plan given to us on arrival we set off to wander wherever.
As informed from the leaflet, Thorp Perrow is the most important Arboretum in the North of England and is unique to Britain, if not Europe, in that it was created by one man, Colonel Sir Leonard Ropner. As the years have gone by future generations have expanded and created what we see today, one hundred acres of National Plant Collections and Champion trees. As you walk around you will see all are numbered and you can find these listed in their catalogue which you can by at the entrance.
There is also a Birds of Prey and Mammal Centre about fifteen minute’s walk from the entrance. Daily displays of the birds and you will find ducks, chickens, meerkats, pygmy goats and wallabies in the Mammal Area for a hands on experience.
Do come and enjoy this wonderful place, all our beautiful Country Hideaways cottages are well within travelling distance to Thorp Perrow Arboretum just outside Bedale. Call me, Nadine or my daughter Joanne, on 01969 663559 for friendly help and advice and to book over the telephone or, of course, do book online if you prefer.
We’re looking forward to hearing from you from you soon!
