Well they say there’s a first time for everything and this was one of those occasions, not to travel on the Settle to Carlisle railway but to travel to Leeds on the Settle to Carlisle line. From here in the dales it’s an easy journey, no parking charges, usually an uncrowded train and direct into Leeds station.
A beautiful ride winding down in between the hills past Whernside, Ingleborough in the distance, along with Pen-y-gent, lesser known hills, Blea Moor, Great Knoutberry Hill and many more to identify. The train passes over the Ribblehead Viaduct although not so easy to see when on the train. There is a station at Ribblehead so plan a walk from there which takes you to the viaduct, perhaps experience the walk up Whernside. The train stops and passes through quite a few little stations, all quite individual but all interesting. Dent is the highest station on a main line in England at a height of 1150 feet above sea level. But you don’t have to go to Leeds. Stop at Shipley and walk a mile or so along the canal side to Saltaire and enjoy the delights to be found in Salts Mill, made famous by David Hockney. Alight at Bingley and walk up to the locks, brilliant café there, retrace your steps a little way and continue to walk on to Saltaire. Stop in Settle, Skipton, lots to explore.
We enjoyed our day in Leeds, plenty of retail therapy for those living in the heart of the country! A friendly city and quite achievable to walk round for a few hours. The famous Victoria Quarter, Henry Moore Institute with the Leeds Art Gallery next door, Corn Exchange, the Grand Theatre with Opera North, Kirkgate Market, I could go on!
