We are so lucky to have the Leyburn Arts and Community Centre in the dales. It seems to go from strength to strength and has a great variety of events, exhibitions, cinema, music and theatre, workshops happening all year round. All are welcome to enjoy, just look on their website for details during your stay.
The building was originally the catholic school in Leyburn and built by local builders Chapleo and Sons using stone from the nearby Washford Quarry. To quote ‘It was the tradespeople of the town who provided the impetus for the building of the school and John Chapleo had collections made in different places to cover the cost of £2000 for the building of both the school and the church. The school appears to be unusual in that, other than a very small endowment of £4 per year from the local Riddell family its establishment and support seems to have been funded by the people of the area.’ The school welcomed both catholic and non catholic children and served the community for 176 years until its closure because of falling numbers in 2011. The opportunity then arose for the existing building to be re-developed for the benefit of the local parish and the wider community of Leyburn and the surrounding areas.
The Centre is now run entirely by hard working volunteers with a paid part time administrator and you’ll find a warm welcome every time you visit, well worth a look!
