A couple of friends and I decided it was way over time to revisit the Himalayan Garden and Sculpture Park near Grewelthorpe and so the day was set and finally dawned. The perfect day was waiting for us, the sun was shining, it was very pleasantly warm, who could wish for more?
Situated just outside Grewelthorpe at an area known as The Hutts, a word derived from the Norse meaning ‘head of the valley’, the farmhouse there was used as a ‘hunting box’ by the Bishop of Truro from 1885, then in 1907 the Dalton’s acquired the land and house expanding the dwelling with more buildings and with plans to make changes to the garden. Finally, the estate was purchased by Peter and Caroline Roberts in 1996 who started on the vast project we now witness today. Clearing, planting, designing, lake making, all leading towards this stunning area which is a joy to wander round.
We started with a coffee and, looking at the map provided, decided which way we were to venture into the gardens, there are lots of footpaths, some quite steep, some with steps, but soon we were off on our adventure. Our leaflet informed us that for 2025 there are ninety permanent sculptures plus a new exhibition of sixty seven sculptures ‘Sculpture in the Landscape’ exploring the intersection of art and nature featuring sculptures from artists around the UK. All of these exhibition works are for sale. Please note the park is open from April to November, check on their website for full details.
There seemed to be so much to see, the plants, sculptures, the views, the lakes, we only managed to wander round half of the gardens before we adjourned for a delicious late lunch in the café the consensus being that we would return to explore the rest at a later date. So looking forward to it!
