Joanne and I were invited to the Georgian Theatre Royal in Richmond for a look behind the scenes! Literally! We arrived on a rainy Wednesday afternoon, along with others, and thoroughly enjoyed an interesting and informative hour or so led by our volunteer guide. The Georgian Theatre Experience is a one hour long tour, venturing back stage, into the stars dressing rooms, even onto the stage! Our guide related the up and downs of the theatre’s fortunes, led us down narrow stairs and told many a story from the theatre’s past. Whilst on your tour you may even experience the excitement of a performance being rehearsed as you step inside the auditorium!
The theatre is the oldest working theatre in Britain in its original form opening in 1788 by actor-manager Samuel Butler. It hasn’t always been a theatre since 1788 but it now stands as a tribute to those who have brought it back to life and how it was all those years ago.
Tours are Monday to Saturday from mid-February to the end of October and are between 10am and 4pm, please call 01748 823710 to check. Adults £5.00 (valid for 12 months) and children £2.00 (valid for 12 months)
Book one of our Country Hideaways holiday cottages in the Yorkshire Dales and you won’t be far away, Richmond is a lovely place to explore too!
