The Dales Countryside Museum in Hawes

Have you been to the Dales Countryside Museum in Hawes in the Yorkshire Dales? If not, do visit and while away a couple of hours or so. Lots for kids to enjoy too and there is invariably an event/exhibition being held. Do have a look on their website for more information and for opening hours but usually it’s 10am until 5pm February to October and 10am until 4pm November to December. January it’s closed.  You can find the museum in the Old Station Yard where there’s loads of parking, Pay and Display. You can purchase your tickets for the museum when you arrive or you can book in advance by calling 01969 666210 or by emailing hawes@yorkshiredales.org.uk The museum is free for children. Remember the last entry is one hour before closing.

To quote from the Yorkshire Dales National Park website ‘This fascinating museum, managed by the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, tells the story of the people and landscape of the Yorkshire Dales past and present and stimulates visitors to think about its future. Displays interpret the development of the Dales from prehistoric times to the present day. Themes include school days, home life, leisure time, religion, transport, communication and tourism, farming, local crafts and industries.’

The building itself is a beautiful and interesting conversion of the old railway station in Hawes, there are a couple of carriages outside waiting to be explored and you can enjoy a ‘cuppa’ and cake in the Firebox café. There’s lots of tourist information to be found, a gift shop and a Research Area in the centre.

Make a day in Hawes, stroll around the town, find the little nooks and crannies, visit St Margarets Church, the Wensleydale Creamery. Time for play for the kids in the playground and also, don’t forget, cheap petrol at Town Head!
