Don’t you think it’s an intriguing name? Is it a pub, is it a restaurant, is it a visitor attraction? Could be any of these things but, no, Heather and Grouse is now an exciting collection of Arts and Crafts in this wonderful shop in Askrigg in Wensleydale in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. The building has been many things in it’s time but this space would always have seemed to be a shop of some sort, I think I’m right but can find nothing to help with this, and latterly was a Post Office but since then various adventures have come and gone. Here now though is this interesting space which is well worth a visit.
A group of Dales artists and crafts people have come together to open a cooperative shop. The list is nearly endless as to the variety of items you’ll find. Pottery, felting, glass work, paintings, candles, sculptures, ceramics, woodturning.
Just as an aside, did you know that the name Askrigg is of Old Norse origin, consisting of the combination of askr (ash tree) and hryggr (ridge), meaning the ridge where ash trees grew, denoting the existence of Viking settlers and their farming. The oldest settlement probably dates back to the Iron Age.
Do come and stay in one of our lovely Country Hideaways holiday cottages, School House, to sleep four plus one dog, is in Askrigg. Call me, Nadine, or my daughter Joanne, on 01969 663559 for friendly help and advice and to book over the telephone or do book online if you prefer.
We’re looking forward to hearing from you quite soon.
