Circular walk Hardrow to Appersett Viaduct and back in Wensleydale in the Yorkshire Dales January 2017

Last Tuesday saw the first walk of the year with our walking group and what a lovely walk, from Hardrow, in upper Wensleydale, to Appersett Viaduct and back in large circle.

Keeping to the lowlands, no steep hills to work our way up but even though we kept to the valley bottoms the views were just sensational. It may have been a grey winters day but we couldn’t help stopping to take in the views across the dale and the colours, burnt umbers, the nearly lime green grass, the darkest of brown trees silhouetted and the silver river wending its way to lower realms. Again just breathtaking, this wonderful dale never ceases to amaze.

We carefully and thoughtfully parked in Hardrow and made our way to the little bridge there. Opposite the Green Dragon you’ll find a path on the east side of the beck leading towards to Burnt Acres Road. Walk along the road, over the bridge, then taking the footpath, west to walk along the river side. Cross over the main road and walk in the direction of Hawes until you come to the footpath after the disused railway line.

Again through the fields coming out at Appersett Viaduct. Walk down a little used road to Appersett, turn in the direction of Garsdale walking a little way along the main A684, over the bridge and take the stile straight in front of you at the junction. Follow the footpaths back to Hardrow. About two and half hours easy walking. We then called at Simonstone Hall to be treated with lashings of tea and homemade scones. A very satisfying afternoon.

My directions are sparse but you will be able to follow them from the OS Explorer Map OL30. Always wear suitable clothing and footwear, be prepared for changes in the weather but most of all enjoy and stay safe!
