Circular walk by Addlebrough, taking in Bainbridge and Askrigg and back to Thornton Rust in Wensleydale

Another fantastic walk, about ten miles in all, pretty easy going for most of the way and some fabulous views across to Semer Water and the splendour of Wensleydale in the glorious Yorkshire Dales. Again, take your map for reference as my directions may be quite sparse but will give you a very good idea of the route we took. Stay safe, wear appropriate footwear and clothing, take snacks and water and above all, you know it, enjoy!

We met in the little public car park in Thornton Rust and set off up the hill on the track towards Addlebrough, the weather was a bit mizzley so we donned our waterproofs to set off with. The way is well defined here as you follow the track in between the two walls. After awhile the wall is no longer on your left, here you bear left and walk in open moorland towards Addlebrough. Keep going making your way round the base of the hill to the Carpley Green Road, from here there are wonderful views of Semer Water and Raydale. The weather had cleared and it was now quite, quite magical.

If you wish to scale Addlebrough it’s well worth the effort as the views are tremendous from up there. There is a permissible pathway but I have yet to find the path that can take you to Carpley Green Road which was our intended route so after exploring on the top perhaps come back down the way you came and continue on the path as before. (I am going up again sometime and see if there really is a way down to the west and will keep you posted.)

Once on the Carpley Green Road down the hill we go in to Bainbridge, skirt along the right hand side of the green and take the road for Askrigg passing Yorebridge House Hotel and once over the bridge turn immediately right through the stile for Askrigg. Follow straight along here keeping the disused railway line on your left coming out eventually in Askrigg. Walk along the road side for a few yards, past Low Mill Outdoor Centre and Yorebridge School, in the next field you’ll see a footpath going across to the church, follow this and come out into the centre of the village. Here we paused for sustenance at Humble Pie, too many cakes and home baking to choose from and my coffee was excellent.

After our stop we then crossed over the road, went down the hill a little way and went up Silver Street. At the top bear off to the right and continue to follow the footpath to take you near to Worton Bridge, cross over the road, not the bridge, and follow the footpath along the banks of the river Ure to Nappa Mill. Here you leave the river for a while to walk keeping the disused railway line on your right. It’s well signposted but again check your map. Eventually you’ll come to a three way finger post, cross over the railway line in the direction of Aysgarth. Now with the disused railway line on your left continue in between both railway line and river to Wath Bridge. I see it isn’t named on my map but there is a parking area here and the bridge is a metal footbridge so unmistakable. From here be very careful as we go to our right along the busy A684 just for a little while. Pass Seata Farm and at the next finger post on the left take this path through the fields in the direction of Hawthorn. Again it’s well signposted. Continue on a gradual incline back up to the road to Thornton Rust and back to your car or public transport if you came by the The Little White Bus.

If you would like to do this walk from the doorstep we have West Cottage, to sleep five plus one small dog, and The Bield, to sleep six plus two dogs, in the village. Cosy, comfortable and places to just relax after a day in the fresh air and wonderful countryside.
