On another very warm and sunny day we felt ice cream was in order but first we had to earn it! Well not really but any excuse. A three mile plus walk setting off from Brymor Ice Cream Parlour at High Jervaulx, easy going and with lovely long views of the lower dale, it was a pleasure to be out and walking.
Although a short, easy walk, please plan your route beforehand, wear appropriate clothing and footwear and take snacks and drinks along with GPS, compass and map. There is a short stretch which can be boggy when wet so be prepared. We crossed quite comfortably, there were a few stones to pick your way over when we walked.
We parked in the top car park at Brymor Ice Cream and walked back down to the lower car park and then out to the road the way we had driven in. Just at the junction there is a stile on the right under the High Jervaulx sign, through here and carefully pick your way up the field keeping the hedge on your left. Over the step stile and then once in the field take the next footpath on the left. With the hedge again on your left, back out onto the road, B6160, at the edge of North Wood. Turn right and carefully walk along the road for a few yards until you see a large metal gate by a telegraph pole on your left to take you away from the road and into the fields, there is a footpath sign. Following the way on your map/GPS to come out onto the driveway to Ramshaw. Follow the road to the house and once in the courtyard turn left and go through the hand gate, follow along now until you reach Kilgram Lane. Turn left once on the road here and walk along, past the small telephone exchange until you reach the entrance to Jervaulx Park. It does say Private but walkers are allowed.
Walk along the driveway in the park, pass the lake and if you like walk to the abbey and have a wander round. Back to the route and where the pathway splits on the map, double back slightly (?) and head for the gatehouse, soon visible, to take you out onto the A6108. Cross over here, there is a finger post, and walk up the side of the field, a new path not on my map, not even OS Maps, to Brymor Ice Cream.
We enjoyed a ‘cuppa’ and an ice cream, how many flavours to choose from, too many? Do come and enjoy this lovely route walking through Jervaulx Park and explore the abbey.
