Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle, Teesdale

The Silver Swan at Bowes Museum

I think it must be over fifty years since I’ve been to Bowes Museum, the Silver Swan automaton being the one thing that has remained vivid in my mind. An interesting exhibition and talk was advertised so a little group of us decided to book tickets and venture forth!

Bowes Museum is in Barnard Castle in Teesdale in Country Durham and a wonderful journey from Wensleydale. Various routes to explore and decide upon to get there but all offer something special. As stated on the Bowes Museum website ‘The Bowes Museum is a hidden treasure, a jewel in the heart of beautiful Teesdale. The magnificent building stands proud in the historic market town of Barnard Castle and houses internationally significant collections of fine and decorative arts.’

It was the vision of John and Josephine Bowes who both met in Paris and, once married in 1852, together created this world-class museum in Teesdale, John’s ancestral home. A place to enjoy the many treasures John and Josephine collected, the various special events throughout the year and to wander in the gardens with it’s magnificent parterre to the front of the museum. The café is a must and it’s probably best to book beforehand as it’s so popular.

If  you’ve time Barnard Castle is an interesting place to explore, maybe next time for us!

Do come and stay in one of our beautiful Country Hideaways holiday cottages and venture to Barnard Castle. Call me, Nadine, or my daughter Joanne, on 01969 663559 to book over the telephone and for friendly help and advice or, of course, do book online if you prefer.
