The Wheatsheaf Inn in Carperby in Wensleydale

A few friends and I decided it was time to have lunch together and The Wheatsheaf Inn in Carperby in Wensleydale in the Yorkshire Dales was our chosen venue. My husband Geoff and I having been going to The Wheatsheaf for many, many years and we’ve always enjoyed a warm welcome, from owners and staff alike and invariably a roaring fire lit in the cooler months in the main bar area. Yesterday was no exception, apart from the fire as the weather if getting warmer of course!

Some of our party had been before, some not but all were delighted with our outing. The staff were more than helpful, our food was good and seemed to arrive in ‘quick sticks’!  A great choice of menu and we were told that we could choose from the main menu or from the lunchtime menu, puddings also to indulge in.

The Wheatsheaf Inn, built in the early 1800’s, is renowned now for its association with the All Creatures Great and Small series as being the place where Alf Wright, the author of It Shouldn’t Happen to a Vet, James Herriot, and his new wife Helen spent their honeymoon in November 1941. Incredibly, only six weeks later, in January 1942, Greta Garbo stayed following an evening where she  had been entertaining troops at Catterick Garrison with Henry Hall the band leader.
