Voices From The Dales

Voices from the Dales

Have you been listening to the podcasts Voices from the Dales? I’d forgotten all about them until the start of Series Three was written about in the Darlington and Stockton Times. The podcasts are each just fifteen minutes long and are such gentle, delightful reminders of what the Yorkshire Dales was like fifty maybe sixty years ago, even further back, and bringing us right up to date.

The first series, which was aired from March 2021, has fifteen episodes and journalist Andrew Fagg, born in Hawes, coaxes people to describe what they remember of school life, going to chapel, working on the farm.  The first episode talks of a cockerel down a chimney, school closures, sex education and a ‘Roman toilet’ all spoken by people who still live in the dale. Listen carefully to the accent and if you can’t decipher the words then listen in on Series Two and Andrew gives us a lesson on the dialect of the dales. Just wonderful!

Kit Calvert, infamous for Wensleydale Cheese and the beginnings of the Wensleydale Creamery in Hawes, is speaking of past times, Marie Hartley and Joan Ingleby tell us how the Dales Countryside Museum also in Hawes came into being. Roland Dent, who lives in West Burton and is a Methodist lay preacher, gives us a two minute sermon whilst stood on West Burton Methodist Chapel steps.

These are just a few jottings of the richness of these podcasts, please do have a listen I’m sure you’ll enjoy.
