Well, the wonderful weather just keeps going on and on, which is great for us but really the land could do with some rain, perhaps through the night would be perfect! My friend, Denny, and I felt it was time to do a walk from Middleham in Coverdale and to enjoy the sunshine to the full. Our walk is about four miles, mostly easy going apart from one steep little hill, walk along a stretch by the river Cover and through the wood, very pretty with lots of wild flowers to discover.
Please do plot your route beforehand and take GPS, compass and map with you and always plenty to drink and snacks. Wear appropriate clothing and footwear but most of all we hope you enjoy this walk. On our return we visited the Castle Keep Tea Rooms, sat outside and enjoyed wonderful scones and hot coffee. For me there was extra delight which was to just sit and watch the passing of the racehorses either going out for their morning exercise or returning.
Park where you can in Middleham and head for the castle then take the lane to the left of the castle which is part of the Six Dales Trail. Once past the castle take the footpath off to the right into the fields and follow through the fields until you arrive back onto Coverham Lane. You can of course just walk up the road to this point, your decision. Once at Grid Ref: SE 12206 87396 at the start of the gallops head west along Coverham Lane. When you reach the end of the wall on your left hand side, and the bridleway finger post, turn left, through the gate and head downhill to the river Cover and Hullo Bridge. We aren’t going over the bridge but do pause here a while, it’s a great place for a picnic, if you’ve brought one that is! Maybe another day.
Before Hullo Bridge take the stile to your left, east, and continue along the path, soon up hill and soon to pick up the Six Dales Trail again, right here, south to the river, as on the map, and then into the wood, so pretty, to eventually come to the stepping stones across the Cover, Grid Ref: SE 13732 86710. Not a lot of water in the river so easy peasy to cross but again, we’re not going that way! Through the stile in front of you and turn immediately left and walk up hill along Straight Lane. Continue on Straight Lane, we walked out onto the A6108 to extend our walk a little turning left to take us into Middleham and onto Coverham Lane again to the Castle Keep Tea Rooms if you wish.
Do come and stay in one of our beautiful Country Hideaways holiday cottages and enjoy this walk and perhaps exploring Middleham a little and visiting the castle too. Call me, Nadine, or my daughter Joanne, on 01969 663559 for friendly help and advice and to book over the telephone or, of course, do book online if you prefer.
We’re looking forward to hearing from you!
