Leyburn, a small market town in Wensleydale, the Yorkshire Dales

Leyburn, a popular market town, can be found luxuriating on the hill above the River Ure and has magnificent views of Wensleydale. Walk along The Shawl footpath to experience these to the full, quite, quite breath taking.

Structurally it hasn’t changed much at all for many, many years but yet the town and it’s custodians always manage to keep it up to date and interesting. Market day is held every Friday, visit the pretty Anglican church of St Matthew’s and the Catholic church of St Peter and St Paul, enjoy great food in the numerous café’s dotted around the square, quite a few pubs too. A couple of restaurants, Thirteen and The Sandpiper can be well worth a visit, don’t forget to book. Visit Tennants Auction Rooms, one of the largest auction houses in Europe holding sales most weeks, whilst there why not try The Garden Rooms for lunch, a snack, breakfast on Sunday’s also Sunday lunch. They also have shows and exhibitions on throughout the year, check out their website for details.

Lots of independent shops to browse from small businesses selling crafts, a butchers, bakeries, launderette, gifts, pharmacy, a sports shop and walking shop, garden centre, to Milner’s, a modest but interesting department store, Serendipity, always a delight to look in here, a couple of supermarkets, Campbell’s especially is a treasure trove of interesting food to tempt you.

Park your car and walk from here, have a look on the map OL30 for routes, or scroll down the blog for walks from Leyburn, or travel from here to Middleham to explore and visit the castle. Take a ride or even walk to Bolton Castle along The Shawl, you can even catch a train on the Wensleydale Railway to Redmire and walk from there to the castle or just walk back to Leyburn through the fields if you wish. The White Rose Candles in Wensley always makes for an interesting visit, our grandchildren are forever fascinated when the candles are being made.
