Did you know that there are about 4,630 stiles and 5,960 gates to pass through or over in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. I had no idea there would be so many and just think of how many kilometres of footpaths there are, 2,637 according to an article in the Dales 2025 newspaper. I wonder how many miles I’ve walked over the years in this amazing part of the world, how many miles you’ll have walked when on holiday here? So many footpaths to find and explore and if you look deeper into the blog on our website you will find lots of ideas for short walks and longer walks.
But back to the stiles and gates. In the Yorkshire Dales National Park these are maintained by the National Park Authority on behalf of the landowners and farmers, with no cost to them, and have been doing so for over forty years. Quite an undertaking when you think that the authority maintains not only the stiles and gates along the routes but all the signposts, bridges and stepping stones and surfaces. This all costs on average £1 million per annum. Their aim is to have one of the best maintained rights of way networks in the country. No small undertaking I would have thought.
This work is not undertaken lightly as the authority recognises that our visitors and residents alike all need to access the countryside for our health and well-being. A recent National Park Management Plan highlighted that ‘keeping the rights of way network in good condition, and to improve options for cycling and other sustainable outdoor recreation activity’ was in the top six priorities selected by the public.
