Masham seems to be the place for our walks just at the moment but it does make a change to have an easy walk rather than tackling the hills, not that that is always the case. Anyway, on a brilliantly sunny, crystal clear day we set off from the long stay car park by the cricket field just off The Avenue in Masham and did a lovely circular walk of about five miles.
Please do as always, plan your route, wear appropriate clothing and footwear and take your GPS, map, compass, plenty to drink and snacks.
To start the walk make your way to Bank Villa on The Avenue and take the little lane to the right of here towards the Black Sheep Brewery, up the little high hill following the road to the brewery. Here we take a little diversion through the allotment gardens, always interesting through here. Eventually come out on Leyburn Road, the A6108, cross the road, turn left and few yards further turn right along Fearby Road and walk to Westholme Road, carry on and where the road veers to the left, OS Grid Ref: SE 22010 80864, walk straight on over the little bridge along Foxholme Lane into Jameson’s yard. Have a little peak in the cashmere shop and a little further Jameson’s Country Store if you wish. Through the yard and continue along the track to Micklebury Lane taking care to follow the footpath arrows, just over a mile, about half an hours walking.
Once to the Micklebury Lane turn left down the hill. Continue on along the road, down the hill, round to the left, now Havernook Lane, over Shaw’s Bridge and soon after here there is a track down to a farm house and to the right of the track is a footpath. Take the footpath to eventually go east continuing on to the metal bridge, which looking it has seen much better days. Here you have a choice, go through the wood or trip, trap over the metal bridge to the golf course. I much prefer the golf course route as the wood can be quite hazardous especially if there has been rain. So the gold course route it is, turn right at the golf course keeping the woods on your right, just keep going to come out at the car park. Through the car park and out onto Swinton Road. Now turn right to go over the bridge then take the footpath on the left into the golf course again, OS Grid Ref: SE 21646 80133. Walk along the side of the golf course with the River Burn on your left until you see a path on your left going into the trees.
Now gently leave the golf course and follow the path, well walked to eventually come out on Thorpe Road. Turn left, over the bridge, then take the footpath on the right and follow through the wood. Coming out of the wood turn left and walk up the incline, keeping to the track and with the church spire in view keep going. Eventually you will have houses off to the left of you and a gate in front of you, a path joining your way from the left, here you need to turn off to the right. You can’t really see this path until you get to it. Along, through the kissing gate, past the reindeer which are well fenced off, and to the church. Linger a while here if you wish, but eventually make your way out into Masham market place. Just a few yards further and on your left in Johnny Baghdad’s, quirky, welcoming and does great food and cakes. Say no more!
