Finghall and the Wind in the Willows

Finghall in Wensleydale

Did you know that Finghall in Wensleydale was the place that inspired Kenneth Grahame to write Wind in the Willows? Nope not I, nor my husband but there we are, you learn something every day as they say. Mole, Ratty, Toad and Badger are four friends living in the Wild Wood and he even named the Wild Wood in the book after the Wild Wood near to Finghall.

There is a lovely walk round Finghall taking in the Wild Wood where apparently Kenneth Grahame used to walk on his many visits to the village. Please follow this link to find the route, just two miles and all easy going with lots of information and photos about the village and what there is to find on the route.

Finghall, found about four miles east of Leyburn and six miles west of Bedale, has a village hall which hosts a variety of events throughout the year, there is St Andrew’s Church, which dates back to the 12th century and the village is also located on the Wensleydale Railway line, which runs between Northallerton and Redmire. At this time of year the Polar Express runs between Leeming Bar and Finghall. The Queen’s Head prepares delicious meals and there is always a warm welcome awaiting you but always check they are open and book a table beforehand.

The village is mentioned in the Domesday Book as Fingall and had thirteen inhabitants, now there is about two hundred. Watch out for the annual Spring Bank Holiday Barrel Push, there’s always great excitement.

A quiet, peaceful village, well worth a visit. Sadly we don’t have cottages in Finghall but all our beautiful Country Hideaways holiday cottages are well within travelling distance. Come and enjoy the walk mentioned round the village and walk in Kenneth Grahame’s footsteps and explore the village. You can always finish off at The Queen’s Head for a relaxing drink and/or a meal. Call me, Nadine, or my daughter Joanne, on 01969 663559 to book over the telephone and for friendly help and advice or do book online if you prefer.

Hear from you really soon!
