Cottage

Description

The Old Wheelhouse is a truly unique, historic and romantic two bedroom apartment in a stunning setting, a delightfully stylish apartment to sleep four people comfortably with many original features. The Old Wheelhouse is in a superb location overlooking Walden Beck and the Cauldron Falls. The green is a short walk away as are the excellent village shop, the welcoming Fox and Hounds and butchers and there are plenty of walks from the village for you to enjoy. Try walking to Aysgarth, take a picnic or have lunch there or just an ice cream. Hawes, Leyburn, Richmond, Ripon, Skipton are all in easy reach for you to explore too.

Wake up to the wonderful sound of a waterfall outside your bedroom. Open the curtains and see uninterrupted views of Walden Beck tumbling through a 500 year old pack horse bridge into a pool that is perfect in Summer for wild swimming. In Winter, admire giant icicles forming on the waterfall - all from the warmth and comfort of this spectacular apartment. Tastefully modernized, the large old mill windows enable residents to view the changing Nature around them from the privacy of their own comfortable space.

The owners have retained many of the original features including exposed stone walls and ironwork and complemented them with stone flagged and oak floors, antique rugs, leather sofas and old oak chests. All furnishings have been individually chosen to reflect the colour and feel of the surrounding Dales: green, dark reds, slate, wood and wool all give the impression of the outside and inside blending together.

Entrance is by four stone steps that lead over a flagged veranda and through double doors into a wide panelled hallway. To the left is a loft style, open plan kitchen, dining and living area with a rich oak floor, double aspect windows, and leather sofas. Also off the entrance hall is a spectacular double height bedroom with super king-sized zip and link bed, huge double aspect windows overlooking the waterfalls, beck and moors beyond. Copper lights hang from the old mill workings, antique rugs adorn the flagged floor and luxurious furnishings make this a room you won't want to leave. Adjacent to this bedroom is a panelled bathroom with flagged floor, bath, shower, washbasin, toilet and yet another incredible view to the waterfall. To the far side of the living area a door leads to another very stylish bedroom with open views of the river and dales, a lovely king size oak bed, exposed stone walls and old prints of the local waterfalls by Turner when he stayed in Wensleydale.

The Mill is set off to the lower end of the village of West Burton by the beautiful Cauldron Falls, giving the benefit of privacy whilst only a two minute walk from the village with its pub, shop, butchers and historic village green. It is surrounded by ancient woods, moors, streams and wildlife. There are footpaths from the doorstep leading up through wildflower meadows or sledging in winter making this an ideal area for those wanting to get away from it all.

If there will be no more than 2 in your party we can offer 5% discount from the published price. Discounted price is quoted above in the 'SUMMARY' if 2 or less adults/children are added to your party.

Country Hideaways went above and beyond with a small issue we had with fridge, and we were very impressed with their care.

A lovely facility with the river and waterfall just outside. A little disappointed that no condiments (ie salt and pepper, sugar) were provided, but plentiful towels and bedding. Not as quiet or private as I hoped, because there were at least five units in the same building, with people sitting outside just underneath the windows talking and smoking.

This is our fourth stay at the Old Wheelhouse. It feels like coming home. The flat is cozy and well appointed. The village is lovely and the falls are stunning. We look forward to the next visit.

Overall, very comfortable. Unfortunately no hot water or heating on last morning. Provision of basic condiments would have been nice eg sugar, tea, coffee. Stay spoilt by raucous party in adjoining apartment at the weekend. No consideration shown by the party for their neighbours.

The apartment is excellent - incredibly clean, a great location right next to the waterfall, and it has everything you need for a great stay. The beds are comfortable, the kitchen is well equipped, the bathroom very functional and clean, and there is a really nice small patio area at the front of the property. West Burton itself is a picture postcard village and a great base for walks of varying difficulties. We had some superb weather and enjoyed our stay. Would definitely return, and would recommend Country Hideaways.

We have used Country Hideaways for several years and have always found them to be friendly and helpful. We love West Burton finding it both a beautiful location to enjoy in itself with great walks from the village in the surrounding area, as well as a base to explore the area further. The Wheelhouse apartment is clean, comfortable and very well presented with lovely outlooks from each window. We also enjoy sitting on the porch facing the falls and chatting to passers by. The village shop and butchers are both well stocked and helpful.

From the moment we arrived, we were smitten! Such comfy, homely accommodation in the most stunning spot. A great location in easy reach of so many interesting places and wonderful eateries. Beautiful views from almost every window and could listen to the falls all day long. Accommodation had all the home home comforts, and nice welcoming touches. Will definitely stay again. Only complaint was that our stay was not long enough!

We have stayed at the Watermill several times as it is a great location with beautiful views. The apartment is really cosy and comfortable. Very thoughtfully planned and stylishly furnished with plenty of space and atmospheric lighting. We love the comfy seating which make for a nice place to sit and read or listen to music. Despite the location the apartment is warm and dry. Porch is great area to unload after a wet walk and hall has practical space for boots and shoes.

This was our third stay at the Old Wheelhouse. We always enjoy our visits. The falls are gorgeous and the village so lovely and welcoming. The Old Wheelhouse is wonderfully restored. A cozy and comfortable retreat. We enjoyed Bonfire Night and were pleasantly surprised at how quiet the flat was with a crowd still on the village green.

The Old Wheelhouse is tastefully decorated to maintain its character and original features and sits in a quiet and picturesque spot with views out to the waterfall and mill stream. Very clean, all essentials available and lots of hooks and space for outdoor clothes. The heating works very efficiently so that the cottage warms up very quickly. The small boiler room is great for drying wet walking gear. Very comfy bed. Would definitely recommend.

Overall we really enjoyed our stay and in general terms it was well equipped and comfortable in a great location. There were a couple of minor issues such as three chipped mugs and no nonslip bathmat for inside the bath. When we arrived on a very hot day the central heating was on full blast.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and may come again if possible. The pools nearby were a wonderful pleasure for the family during the heat wave. It was more spacious than usual and the village is friendly. All round a good visit.

We were very impressed with the Old Wheelhouse, particularly its location. The falls at West Burton are very accessible and perfect for a paddle or a swim, bit chilly for us but in the warm weather it’s a 10 second walk into the water. The apartment is lovely, well fitted out, with a lot of character. It has all you need, the bed is really comfortable, the shower is great and there’s plenty of space. There’s a decent village shop, tea room, good butcher (run by the farmer) and a pub in the village. If you’re there with children, there’s play equipment and football goals on the village green and lots of walks right from the door. Highly recommended.

Loved this cottage - fantastic location, wonderful views, and incredibly comfortable beds! Will definitely come back - glorious walks from the door in all directions, rivers to swim in, lambs gamboling in the fields, and a bench with a perfect waterfall view for a cup of tea at the end of every lovely day.

The hot water in the bathroom was inadequate - a bath was not possible and the water to sink and shower took a long time to get hot . We couldn’t get adequate heating in the evening and so we’re forced to turn the thermostat up . Beautiful place in a beautiful location. Beds comfy ; kitchen adequate.Nice decor. Good company to book through .

We stayed at the same property in August 2020 and loved our stay so much we decided to book again. The property is just the right size for my wife and I and our two kids 6 and 8. The feel is cosy and comfortable rather than top spec but this is exactly what we're looking for on a trip to the Dales. The whole place was well sanitised on our arrival - COVID being a concern. The kitchen is kitted out with everything you could reasonably expect, although the freezerbox in the top of the fridge is small and easily ices over. The TV/DVD are in good working order, my kids were pleased they could access their daily fix of YouTube. The drying room is an absolute boon, so much so that my wife wants one at home! The bedrooms were clean and comfortable and afford lovely views of the beck and waterfalls. Plenty of hot water when required for showers and a bath for the kids.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this very quirky, historical apartment - one part of a cleverly converted watermill. We have previously stayed, on a couple of occasions, in the lower part of this property - also very interesting. We have now booked holidays with Country Hideaways on a total of four occasions and we have always been very pleased with the service we have received and the quality of the accommodation provided.

A lovely property in a beautiful village, it had everything needed for a relaxing holiday in the glorious Yorkshire dales. The views were amazing and the sound of running/falling water, especially after a couple of days of rain, was very soothing. The property had everything we needed, in spite of being stripped back for hygiene reasons, and was very comfortable and homely. We were there for a week and even though on our arrival day there was a wedding taking place at the waterfall, our allocated parking space was always available. Would thoroughly recommend The Old Wheelhouse and Country Hideaways.

PRO's - Situated in a handy part of the Dales for trips out to various towns/villages/walks/sightseeing, charming rustic appeal. CON's - Car parking is also open to the general public visiting adjacent waterfall, meaning sometimes no room for your car, so park in village and walk back to accommodation; Lots of spiders inside the property; Noisy people in rooms above The Old Wheel House, means you can hear every footstep they make; Accommodation requires constant use of de-humidifier and in a week it needed emptying twice @ approx 2-3L each time - the back filter of the machine was full of fluff and it ran very hot(possible fire hazard?), so only used it when we were in, turning it off when we were out and at night.

Wefind The Wheelhouse in West Burton a lovely place to stay. The accommodation is beautifully presented, comfortable and well equipped and the village is a delight. The nearby river and waterfall are a joy. We have explored both locally and further afield and find plenty to enjoy whatever the weather. Local folk have always been friendly and helpful and nearby Visitor Centres at Aysgarth and Hawes also. The village shop and butcher supply good quality provisions and pubs and tearooms in the area serve great food for eating out.
