Circular Walk from Redmire

Share
Bolton Castle in Wensleydale

On a stunning, crystal clear day we set off to walk about seven miles in a circular manner from Redmire in Wensleydale in the Yorkshire dales. Sunny, calm, but cold, we were well prepared with all our layers and good footwear just in case it was icy. A walk of magnificent views into Wensleydale, no long climbs and passing through three villages of Redmire, Castle Bolton and Carperby so plenty of interest.

As always please plan your route beforehand, wear appropriate clothing and footwear and take your map, compass and GPS along with lots of snacks and drinks.

Parking in Redmire we set off along Hargill Lane in the direction of Reeth, passing the Bolton Arms and coming to a footpath on the left. Alas at time of walking the finger post had lost its footing and was laid down so just keep a look out for a gap in the low wall for the footpath until the post is reinstated. OS Grid Ref: SE 04444 91376. Follow the footpath to Castle Bolton, not forgetting to turn sharp right in the last field to take you up into the village. Once in the village turn left, west, and walk to Bolton Castle, keeping the castle on your left and St Oswald’s Church on the right walk straight ahead, past the car park, past the wild boar (there was a large litter of piglets as we walked past, very cute) and continue along the track to come out in Carperby. OS Grid Ref: SE 00979 89991.

Pause in Carperby if you wish, lots of benches to rest on, or even visit the Wheatsheaf Inn, great food there. Directly opposite the pub is our path with a metal gate, through here, over the little bridge then head for the stile on the left of the field. Walk through quite a few fields following the signs, and when you come to the drumlins, large mounds, walk between these, then up the hill to find a stile. Cross the field to meet the track, over the cattle grid then leave the track and go through the metal gate on the left to pick up the footpath again. Keep going straight on to go under a disused railway bridge, along the side of a large field, enter into a wooded area onto a track leading into a narrow lane. Follow to Low Thoresby and Thoresby Lane and eventually come out onto the road at Low Bolton. Turn right, walk along the road to the next stile by Apedale Beck and return to Hargill Lane the way you came or walk a little further on the road to the next stile, here, cross the field, arriving in the village again.

Do come and stay with us and enjoy this wonderful walk. Call me Nadine or my daughter Joanne on 01969 663559 to book over the telephone and for friendly help and advice or please do book online if you prefer.

See you soon!
