Did you hear that there is a new Cancer Garden at Bolton Castle, a gentle, thoughtful addition to the historic grounds, and a place that invites visitors to pause. Created by long‑time gardener Elizabeth Carter, it reflects more than twenty months of research into medieval medicinal plants once used to treat cancer and other serious illnesses. Set within the south‑eastern walled garden, the small physic bed feels both intimate and quietly powerful.
Elizabeth has chosen plants such as Madonna Lily, Hyacinth, Asarabacca, Autumn Crocus, and Baikal Skullcap — species linked historically with purgatives, tumour treatments, and remedies for “black bile,” the medieval understanding of cancer. Her aim was to honour Harry, the 8th Lord Bolton, who died in 2023, while also sharing the heritage of herbal medicine with visitors.
The garden may be modest in size, just 15ft by 6ft, but it carries a great deal of heart. It sits alongside the wider herb gardens Elizabeth has tended for years, adding a new layer of meaning to one of Wensleydale’s most atmospheric sites. For anyone visiting this summer, it’s well worth seeking out — a quiet space, beautifully made, and full of purpose.
Not only can you enjoy strolling the gardens but you can also take time to have a ‘cuppa’ and explore the castle its self and as mentioned in the previous blog, made famous by Mary Queen of Scots who was held captive there between July 1568 until January 1569. Perhaps more about Mary Queen of Scots in a further blog might be interesting!
