The Station in Richmond just on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales

The Station in Richmond, North Yorkshire

The Yorkshire Dales is a wonderful area to visit in North Yorkshire, having lived here for over fifty years there are still things to find and explore and, of course, it’s villages and towns are forever changing. Shops close, shops open, restaurants close and something else will take it’s place. Ever evolving as does everywhere, always interesting. You can come here and walk, eat, drink, explore on foot and by car etc, whatever you wish. Sometimes though it’s a pleasure to feel you can just go and enjoy a good film! Surprised? Yes?

But even though we all adore being out and surrounded by this amazing countryside sometimes it’s good to switch off and be transported to wherever. For this if you feel the need, do go to The Station in Richmond. An interesting building in itself converted from the original station buildings.

The station was first opened in 1846 part of the Newcastle to York branch line from Dalton to Richmond. A great asset for the town of Richmond bringing soldiers, tourists and, of course, much needed produce and staples to the town and the area. Sadly the line was closed in 1969 but in 1974 was given a new lease of life and became a farm and garden centre, which I remember visiting quite regularly. In 1986 the building was given Grade II listed status. The garden centre closed in 2001 and remained unused until the building was acquired by the Richmondshire Building Preservation Trust (RBPT), a locally based heritage restoration charity, but remained largely unchanged but at last work started in 2006 to reimagine and restore this interesting place and was completed in 2007 to more or less what we see today.

You can enjoy a meal, browse interesting shops along the old platform, there’s usually art to peruse on the gallery, events taking place and there are three screens so choice is there too. With comfy seats, it’s always warm and the staff are lovely, pensioners rates and the films are new releases so perhaps it might be a rainy afternoon or evening and time to visit. Arrive early and enjoy exploring.

Come  and enjoy all The Station in Richmond has to offer and book your tickets, you can do this very easily online, always good to book though. Come and stay in one of our beautiful Country Hideaways holiday cottages which are all well within travelling distance to The Station. Call me, Nadine, or my daughter Joanne, on 01969 663559 for friendly help and advice and to book over the telephone or, of course, do book online if you prefer.

As always, Joanne and I are very much looking forward to hearing from you.
