Happy New Year everyone! Joanne and I wish you great joy, peace of mind, happiness and wonderful holidays in the glorious Yorkshire dales! But did you see the moon over the New Year? What a magnificent sight it was, wow, wow, wow or should that be wowooooo! We had clear, clear skies here for a quite a few nights and were able to enjoy the moon with Jupiter too just below. But there was some dispute as to what this full moon was called, wolf, tiger, blue even harvest? So I thought I should just look and see what it was actually called, Google would know. What information I found, so surprising too. I was completely ignorant of its mysteries.
Without going into too much detail, I’ll put a link on but it’s quite easy to find it anyway. Each calendar month there is a full moon as it goes through it’s cycle. 29.5 days to be precise and this never changes. It completes 12 full cycles of its phases in about 354 days – which is 11 days short of a calendar year. Every two and a half years or so the difference adds up to an extra, 13th full moon occurring during the year and this relatively rare occurrence is sometimes referred to as a ‘blue moon’.
I had no idea that each full moon of the month had a different name, shall I list them? Why not? The following dates are for 2026.
3rd January – Wolf Moon
1st February – Snow Moon
3rd March – Worm Moon
2nd April – Pink Moon
1st May – Flower Moon and on the 31st May a Blue Moon!
30th June – Strawberry Moon
29th July – Buck Moon
28th August – Sturgeon Moon
26th September – Corn or Harvest Moon
26th October – Hunter’s Moon
24th November – Beaver Moon
24th December – Cold Moon
Look on this website by the Royal Museums Greenwich for totally fascinating information about why these full moons were called as they are, it explains the eight phases of the moon and much more.
