Why Three Hamlets in Raydale?

Semer Water in Raydale

Raydale is little dale immediately south from Bainbridge in Wensleydale and of course is famous for the serene and beautiful Semer Water. Lots of walks to enjoy, round Semer Water, up the hills and far away. A walk along the River Bain from Bainbridge to Semer Water is something to truly enjoy. But whilst in Raydale have a little look at the three tiny hamlets of Countersett, the largest, Marsett and Stalling Busk.

But why are there three settlements in such a small dale? What was the attraction so long ago when people first started to build and settle there? I’ve tried to do some research but have come up with no answers at all, not even the question asked. Look at Bishopdale, why no settlements in Bishopdale? There are quite a few dwellings but I would say all originally farmhouses. What about Walden? Again farmhouses but no hamlets. Was it Semer Water that was the pull, was there good fishing, that doesn’t seem to be the case even though there is plenty of trout at the moment. Raydale has its fair share of farmhouses but what did the people in the hamlets do? Okay there would be work on the farms and associated products from that. Or was it for religious reasons? There was quite a Quaker following in Countersett, but the chapel in Marsett is Methodist and St Matthew’s Church in Stalling Busk is neither so no connection there.

I suppose you could say this of all the communities in these dales and a trip to the Dales Countryside Museum in Hawes would explain how people made a living over the generations and perhaps I should visit to learn more about this. Having lived here for over fifty years I do feel quite ignorant at times but still the question why three hamlets in Raydale in particular?

Come and explore Raydale for yourselves, we have beautiful cottages for you enjoy and all within striking distance of this stunning dale. Call me Nadine or my daughter Joanne on 01969 663559 for friendly help and advice and to book over the telephone or do book online if you prefer.
