Ripon Cathedral has stood on this same sight since the mid seventh century. In 672AD St Wilfrid, then abbot of the monastery at Ripon, took the bold step of building a stone basilica with a crypt, so bringing to the kingdom of Northumbria a style of building that he had seen in Rome. The church above-ground has been rebuilt more than once on a grander plan than Wilfrid’s, but his crypt survives intact and has been a very special place for more than 1300 years. It is a national treasure and makes Ripon unique since it is the oldest structure of any English cathedral.
For me this magnificent structure has been ever present, feeling the first time of remembering a visit was when we happened to go when a brass band was playing. What a terrific sound, it was a practice session so really no one was in the building and sound just rippled round the old walls, never to be forgotten. A truly beautiful building with events happening all year round. One event we always attend is the Christmas Carol Concert by Candlelight in December in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support, such a wonderful evening to attend.
