Our visit to the Wensleydale Creamery in Hawes

Joanne and I made our way through the most beautiful countryside to Hawes and to the Wensleydale Creamery, it’s been a while since we last went but had heard that a lot had been happening since we were there.

There is now a new interactive experience taking you on a journey through the art of cheesemaking but also a very interesting Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese making demonstration. The guy who did our demonstration was so knowledgeable and took us back to when the cheese was originally made by Kit Calvert by the side of Duerley Beck in Hawes taking us through the history to present day. Further along you can watch the cheese actually being made just to prove it is all still made by hand.

We so enjoyed the cheese tasting, twenty three different types of cheese to try! Of course we had to treat ourselves to take some home. There’s also a brilliant gift shop to browse and if you wish you can enjoy lunch in Calvert’s restaurant or just a ‘cuppa’ and ‘cake’ in the 1897 Coffee shop. All home made dishes that celebrate the best of Yorkshire Dale’s food inspired by the use of their cheese, butter and milk. There is also a new ice-cream and fudge bar to be tempted even further!

We were there for a couple of hours but could have stayed longer. If you’re in the dale do visit, just great for kids too!

Before  you set off do have a look on the Wensleydale Creamery website for opening times and tips for your visit.
