The Wensleydale Heifer in West Witton, Wensleydale plus Complimentary glass of Fizz!

The Wensleydale Heifer in West Witton, Wensleydale plus Complimentary glass of Fizz!

What a lovely lunch we had at The Wensleydale Heifer the other day. Delicious food, friendly, helpful staff and great surroundings with the bar, the snug, the bistro and, for a more formal meal, the restaurant, with each having their own different atmosphere where you can enjoy your meal. The menu was so extensive we had difficulty choosing although, for us, time was short so we plumped for soup with crusty bread and we were not disappointed. If you have time, as you will when on holiday, why not walk afterwards or before your meal.

Dales Festival of Food & Drink 2018 Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th June!

Dales Festival of Food & Drink 2018 Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th June!

Did you know that since 2002 the Dales Festival of Food and Drink held in Leyburn has generated surplus funds of over £154,000 which has been distributed to local community organisations around the dales. Organised by the Leyburn & Mid-Wensleydale Partnership Ltd we can say a large thank you to them and also for all their hard work in making this event such a superb and varied affair along with the support of local businesses in and around Leyburn, volunteers and members of the Partnership itself.

Circular walk from Helwith Bridge and up Pen-y-Ghent in Ribblesdale

Circular walk from Helwith Bridge and up Pen-y-Ghent in Ribblesdale

Since the weather has changed to being more spring like I’m really getting some walking done, which is great seeing as how our National Three Peaks Challenge seems to be fast approaching! This time it was Pen-y-Ghent. I’ve walked Pen-y-Ghent before quite a few years ago now from Foxup, over Plover Hill and down the crag on Pen-y-Ghent. This time it was decided to set off from Helwith Bridge so quite a different walk from before.

Circular walk to Buckden Pike in Wharfedale in the Yorkshire Dales

Circular walk to Buckden Pike in Wharfedale in the Yorkshire Dales

Another great walk, with simply sensational views, and again it’s a walk I’ve never ventured on before, about nine and a half miles the way we went. Please do take your map for reference, OL30, and remember that even if it’s lovely and warm in the valley bottom it may be freezing cold when you reach the top. We seemed to be going the opposite way to everyone else so you can choose which way to go round. We parked in Buckden Yorkshire Dales National Park car park, parking charge here £4.50 for the day and set off on a stunning spring morning along the Dales Way to Starbotton.

Walk from Ribblehead Viaduct in the Yorkshire Dales, venturing up Whernside and back

Walking up Whernside in the Yorkshire Dales was definitely a first for me. A small group of us set off to scale the heights in early spring on quite a windy day with occasional low cloud covering the tops which just as soon appeared disappeared again. The path was well made up with plenty of sign posts, and large flag stones to walk on for part of the way. We went in an anti-clockwise direction, an easier route, but for a more challenging walk do it the other way round. Just over eight miles start to finish with superb views every step of the way.

Circular Walk from West Witton to Penhill Beacon and Trig Point in Wensleydale

My friend Denny and I have been walking the Yorkshire Dales together more than usual just lately (Den is the one in the picture) we’re in training to attempt the National Three Peaks, Ben Nevis, Scarfell Pike, and Mount Snowdon, beginning of June but what better training ground than in the glorious Yorkshire Dales and this time walking to the top of Penhill.

The Garden Rooms at Tennants in Leyburn, Wensleydale

The Garden Rooms at Tennants in Leyburn, Wensleydale

Have you been to The Garden Rooms yet for lunch? To be found in Leyburn at Tennants. Next time you’re here make a date. For something special try the restaurant, always best book, or after a walk in the hills perhaps a bite to eat in the café or afternoon tea even. Geoff and I went there a couple of weeks ago, we can’t resist always a good experience, food delicious, nice atmosphere and there’s usually an exhibition going on upstairs and if you come on a Friday its viewing day in next doors auctions rooms or on a Saturday there is almost always a sale.
