Circular walk into Walden from West Burton in Wensleydale

Circular into Walden from West Burton in Wensleydale

A lovely walk from the Cauldron Falls in West Burton into Walden and back down via the old/now newly planted plantation. Park your car at the waterfall area or by the village green and please wear suitable clothing and good footwear as the route takes you through pasture and moorland. Always a good idea to plan your route and take the map. The walk is about seven miles, quite easy going but some inclines. Fantastic views all the way.

West Burton Bonfire and Firework Display!

West Burton Bonfire and Firework Display!

Were you there? If you weren’t you missed a very special evening. There seemed to be even more people attending than before, I may be mistaken, and the bonfire was a great blaze. After fourteen years of organising this event Andrew and Keren have passed the work on to someone else, but what a finale they put on. The fireworks were just breath taking, I’m sure better than ever and our grandchildren couldn’t stop saying ‘Wow’ and ‘Amazing’ as they do.

The Return of the Salmon to Walden Beck, West Burton

The Return of the Salmon to Walden Beck

Every year in October for many, many years the salmon have travelled along their demanding route upstream from the sea to Walden Beck, when they get to West Burton they are nearly at their journeys end but there is just one last big obstacle to conquer, the Cauldron Falls. The water flow needs to be just right for them to scale this pretty waterfall, not too dry and not too much in flood. Where they actually spawn I don’t know, only that it’s past West Burton further upstream into Walden. Walden Head is where the beck eventually reaches its source.

Hard at work! West Burton village cross

Hard at work! West Burton village cross

Couldn't resist capturing these two hard at work on the village cross when walking down the green in West Burton. The village cross was originally built in 1820 and I would think has seen many changes in the inhabitants of the village, look out for the stocks on the east side, you can try them for size if you like! Follow the path that runs across the green here and see if you can find the bull ring, now disused of course but exposed as a remainder of past times.

West Burton in the glorious Yorkshire Dales

West Burton in the glorious Yorkshire Dales

I wondered if perhaps it might be a good idea to focus on individual villages in the Yorkshire Dales and venturing further to Nidderdale even and look more closely as to what each has, a bit of history (if possible!) maybe even some statistics! Might take a little research but should be possible.

Snowdrops in West Burton

Snowdrops in West Burton

It's just a start but don't you feel that spring must be on it's way and that the winter is passing when snowdrops make their appearance. Here they are in January just at the entrance to West Burton by Walden Beck as they always are coming up year after year no matter what might be happening with the weather. Natures little soldiers I always think and good to see them too. Soon it will be a carpet of them by the beck, just beautiful!

On the outskirts of West Burton

It's the last day of October, the clocks have gone back and just look at the weather! Just look at the colours, it's nearly too beautiful here in the Yorkshire Dales to bear! But of course we do and just soak it all up joyously!
