Circular walk by Addlebrough, taking in Bainbridge and Askrigg and back to Thornton Rust in Wensleydale

Circular walk by Addlebrough, taking in Bainbridge and Askrigg and back to Thornton Rust in Wensleydale

Another fantastic walk, about ten miles in all, pretty easy going for most of the way and some fabulous views across to Semer Water and the splendour of Wensleydale in the glorious Yorkshire Dales. Again, take your map for reference as my directions may be quite sparse but will give you a very good idea of the route we took. Stay safe, wear appropriate footwear and clothing, take snacks and water and above all, you know it, enjoy!

Thornton Rust in Wensleydale, the Yorkshire Dales

Thornton Rust in Wensleydale, the Yorkshire Dales

Thornton Rust, where does that name come from? Apparently the village was mentioned in the Doomsday Book and you can find out more on Wikipedia. A peaceful village with small greens in front of most of the cottages, a linear village looking down towards the river Ure on its way through Wensleydale. Some six miles from the upper Wensleydale market town of Hawes and a couple of miles west of Aysgarth, famous for its magnificent waterfalls.

Bainbridge in Wensleydale in the glorious Yorkshire Dales

Bainbridge in Wensleydale in the glorious Yorkshire Dales

Bainbridge in Wensleydale, just four miles east of Hawes, goes back to Roman times, and probably beyond, with traces of these times still visible with a roman fort, the outline of which can be seen even though the stones are now covered, and a track leading over Stake Fell to the high ground in Wharfedale, running for some eight miles, can be enjoyed as a bridle way. Known then as Virosidum it now gets its name from the River Bain, the shortest river in England with its source at the magnificent Semer Water.

Askrigg, Wensleydale in the Yorkshire Dales

Askrigg, Wensleydale in the Yorkshire Dales

Askrigg is known to many still by its association with the very popular television programme All Creatures and Small. A village of many parts you could say, historic St Oswald’s seemingly placed in the centre for all to admire – you could also take a look at the new clock face! Tall, terraced buildings give an air of elegance with more traditional dales cottages sprinkled in amongst. New developments too are here too helping to keep this village a lively, living community.
