Lofthouse to Scar House Reservoir in Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

Lofthouse to Scar House Reservoir in Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

What a truly wonderful walk. Was it the weather? Was it the terrain? Was it the fantastic views? All these things made this walk quite special. It’s been years since I’ve walked in upper Nidderdale, I’d nearly forgotten how beautiful it can be. Right at the top where the lush grass changes to moorland we set off on our, albeit ten mile, walk. We parked just at the side of the road on Trapping Hill before Lofthouse, we came over from Masham, and followed the footpath to Middlesmoor and beyond.

For this walk of just over ten miles you really will need your map! OS Landranger 99. We set off on a wonderful autumnal day from Masham, easily parking our cars in the market place. Head off east past the Primary School and follow the track along the river through arable land to a path that goes off to the left. Continue along the river side until you come out onto the road, left again over the bridge and immediately over the bridge take the path to the left to take you along the river side. Keep going along here and you will eventually come to Hackfall Wood.

Grewelthorpe in the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Beauty

Grewelthorpe in the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Beauty

Grewelthorpe, again where does the name originate from? To quote ‘the name Grewelthorpe derives from the words Gruel and Thorpe, Gruel being a family name and thorpe meaning "outlying farmstead", the village is also mentioned in the Domesday Book when it was known at Torp. Grewelthorpe can be found some three miles south of Masham and six miles from Ripon and is in the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Beauty. Beautifully placed to explore the surrounding countryside with plenty of walking to stretch those legs and take in clean, fresh air.

What’s going on in the Yorkshire Dales?

There just seems to be so much happening in the glorious Yorkshire Dales at the moment that it’s difficult to fit everything in or even to go to in some cases. Open Studios, concerts galore in our wonderful churches, agricultural shows, open gardens, art and craft events, plus much that we have missed or not mentioned here. Joanne and I went to Crafted by Hand held in Masham Town Hall in Masham this last Sunday, it was a two day event but Sunday was the best day for us.
