Hawes

From Hawes into Cotterdale and the Pennine Way, two viaducts and a waterfall!

Hawes into Cotterdale and the Pennine Way, two viaducts and a waterfall!

On what turned out to be the perfect January day we set off from Hawes in a north westerly direction. A beautiful circular walk, just over ten miles with a good climb from Thwaite bridge. We saw a train going over Ribblehead Viaduct in the distance to the west and to the east at one point Wether Fell, Addlebrough and Penhill were all visible looking down Wensleydale, a total treat. Again, I cannot stress enough to plan your route, take your map for guidance, a compass is always a good companion, take water etc and snacks and always wear suitable clothing and good footwear.

My friend Wanda and I thought we’d have an adventure and catch the Little White Bus to Askrigg and then on to Hawes. Wanda, from sunny Scarborough, has stayed in our holiday cottages before and felt like a trip up the dale. So having studied the timetable off we went from West Burton village shop at precisely 10:10. We were soon whisked to Askrigg where we alighted and first stop, not bus stop this time, was Humble Pie for coffee and cake, always excellent and we were made so welcome.

Walking on Wether Fell above Hawes in Wensleydale in the glorious Yorkshire Dales

Walking on Wether Fell above Hawes in Wensleydale in the glorious Yorkshire Dales

The hills above Hawes in upper Wensleydale are places I’ve not really explored in all the time I’ve lived here, can’t really understand why but not for much longer I feel after a wonderful walk around Wether Fell. I joined our walking group to enjoy a different part of this amazing part of the world, for me anyway. Splendid views as we went along high above the world we seemed to be, the wind was blowing and there was soon not a cobweb to be had on our persons, totally exhilarating!
