The hills above Hawes in upper Wensleydale are places I’ve not really explored in all the time I’ve lived here, can’t really understand why but not for much longer I feel after a wonderful walk around Wether Fell. I joined our walking group to enjoy a different part of this amazing part of the world, for me anyway. Splendid views as we went along high above the world we seemed to be, the wind was blowing and there was soon not a cobweb to be had on our persons, totally exhilarating!

We had a very nice lunch at the Aysgarth Falls Hotel in Aysgarth, Wensleydale the other day. The hotel hasn’t been known by this name for very long as before it was always Palmer Flatt Hotel, or Palmer. Forty and fifty or so years ago it was the meeting place in the dales, if you hadn’t been to Palmer on a Saturday night you just hadn’t been out! Many romances and future partners developed here, my own included and probably still do!

The Great Yorkshire Show has been held in Harrogate annually since 1838 making this year’s the 160th. No wonder it’s such a popular and long standing event with over 1200 trade stands and 2000 competitions, enough to keep anyone amused for three days or more! The finest livestock are brought here to be judged including cattle, sheep, pigs and pigeons. If you’re into tractors and agricultural machinery you won’t be disappointed, this is where the latest state of the are machinery is showcased and displayed.

Did you know that since 2002 the Dales Festival of Food and Drink held in Leyburn has generated surplus funds of over £154,000 which has been distributed to local community organisations around the dales. Organised by the Leyburn & Mid-Wensleydale Partnership Ltd we can say a large thank you to them and also for all their hard work in making this event such a superb and varied affair along with the support of local businesses in and around Leyburn, volunteers and members of the Partnership itself.
