Tree planting with the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust in Bishopdale

Tree planting with the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust in Bishopdale

What fun Joanne and I had last Saturday morning in Bishopdale, it was a free event organised by the YDMT and part of this year’s Flowers of the Dales Festival. Essential work in practical conservation and couldn’t be done without all the volunteers who come and spend some time planting native broadleaved trees in our glorious Yorkshire Dales.

Four Villages Walk from West Burton in the glorious Yorkshire Dales

St Andrew's Church in Aysgarth, Wensleydale in the Yorkshire Dales

Well, I hate to say it, but I’ve never done this before, been on these footpaths and through these villages many, many times but never all in one walk! Set off from West Burton, you can park at the waterfall area or park on the road by the green. Whatever you do you must have a peep at the Cauldron Falls, such a pretty waterfall. Go over the packhorse bridge here, known as Blue Bridge and make your way up the steps and follow sign to Barrack Wood. Pause in the wood awhile to see what wild flowers you can find and gaze on the views across to Bolton Castle and to Carperby.

I wondered if perhaps it might be a good idea to focus on individual villages in the Yorkshire Dales and venturing further to Nidderdale even and look more closely as to what each has, a bit of history (if possible!) maybe even some statistics! Might take a little research but should be possible.

Walking along Eastfield Lane from West Burton to Thoralby

Walking along Eastfield Lane in between West Burton and Thoralby

A wonderful February day, too good to miss not walking out. An easy walk, just for an hour, setting off from West Burton to Eshington Bridge and along Eastfield Lane, known locally as Spickles Lane, to come out at Thoralby. Here you can go down Goose Lane and over the little footbridge and return walking on the road or take a longer route, not a lot further, and walk to Newbiggin in Bishopdale and return across the fields. Wonderful views at every step and back in plenty of time for tea!
