Spennithorne is a quiet and tranquil village in the lower reaches of Wensleydale yet less than two miles from the small market town of Leyburn. The fells seem a little distant, the trees more abundant, but the peace of the dales is still there.
The river Ure meanders in huge lazy curves almost touching Middleham, serene with its towering castle, and then loops across the valley almost to the fringes of Spennithorne. The village shows its history with a church, first consecrated in the 12th century and a 17th century inn, The Old Horn. The school is a little younger but serves to remind that this is still a thriving community.
