Cottage Description

Welcome to Yorkshire Member Yorkshire Visitor Information

West Cottage is an out of the ordinary and spacious traditional farmhouse, full of delightful surprises. Its two characterful sitting rooms and dining room, with cosy fire places and wood stove, provide ample room for everyone to find their own comfortable nook to relax in. The driveway in front of the cottage leads to a lovely secluded garden and a lower paddock on the hill side. Overlooking the dale a terrace provides an idyllic place to sit, reflect and enjoy the magnificent view towards the crags of Ellerkin, and eastwards as far as 40 miles to the Hambleton Hills.

Entry is through a porch door to the dining room, formerly the farmhouse kitchen with a traditional kitchen range. To one side of the dining room is a comfortable sitting room with stone fireplace and polished wood floor and ceiling. Off the other side of the dining room is a well-equipped kitchen with stone tiled floor leading down two stone steps to a hallway/utility room with flagged floor, open stonework and exposed beams. This in turn leads to a spacious lounge, with polished hardwood floor, vaulted ceiling, wood-burning stove and views out to the garden and the fells beyond. A low glass door leads from this lounge to the driveway and garden. Adjoining the hallway is a tiled shower room with washbasin and toilet.

A stone stairway which is carpeted rises from the dining room to an intermediate landing giving access to a bathroom with bath, washbasin and toilet. A second, larger landing, serves three bedrooms, one small single room, a room with twin beds and the larger room a double bed.

This quirky and very cosy cottage retains many of its original features such as panelled window reveals and seats, panelled ceilings and doors along with picture rails, stone and oak floors and fireplaces. Period fixtures and fittings, fine artwork and memorabilia are set against a general decor that captures the essence of an early dales farmhouse but with all the modern comforts of life. A unique and truly homely cottage with wonderful views across Wensleydale and great walks just on the doorstep.

Please note this cottage is let Friday to Friday.

Please note for winter breaks there is a minimum charge of five nights.

Cottage Reviews

“What a wonderful start to the new year in Wensleydale and Karen's fantastic cottage. We were lucky with the weather and walked everyday and enjoyed coming back to a roaring fire. The five of us were very comfortable here and loved the artwork and charm of the cottage. We would love to return in the spring or summer”
Prof S Van Strien, 28th December 2018
“We have had a lovely week relaxing in your beautiful cottage and exploring the stunning countryside. We love your home and will visit again. Our dog loved it too!”
Mr M Taylor, 7th October 2018
“This is our second visit to this Fab Cottage with Sheena on hand should you need any help. It would be hard to find anyone who worked harder. A beautiful cottage in a working dale”
Mrs S Payne, 29th September 2018
“Warm, comfortable and well-equipped cottage. Feels like a home that is loved. So much to see and do in this very beautiful part of the dales. Thank you”
Mr M Atkinson, 14th September 2018

Mrs E Arnold, 24th August 2018
“What a week. Every day breakfast in the garden while the sun shone on Wensleydale below. We have fallen in love with West Cottage - the ambience, the good taste and the beautiful setting. Seven days is not enough. Thank you to Karen for opening up her wonderful home. Already making plans for our next visit”
Mrs S Allison, 29th June 2018
“What a wonderful place! This is our 4rth visit to Wensleydale and definitely my favourite place to stay. The dog and I have tried a different route every day and we had a great day on bikes from Cycles 1 in Hawes. The house is marvellous, and I shall live for some time to come on memories of my first cup of tea sitting in the morning sunshine looking out over the fells. Thank you for a wonderful, comfortable and beautiful house”
Ms P Sutcliffe, 25th May 2018
“Thank you for your warm welcome to West Cottage and for your gift, both of which we much appreciated. The cottage is beautiful and quite unlike any other 'holiday let' that we have rented in the past, as it has been just like living in your home amongst your wonderful artwork and furnishings. The location and the views are stunning and we have enjoyed some amazing walks in all directions from the village – your suggestions were very helpful, especially over to Gayle Ings. Thank you again for our stay in your special place – we hope to return one day. With our best wishes to you and your family ”
Mr J Meeke, 11th May 2018
“We have had a totally wonderful week at your gorgeous cottage. The moment we walked through the door we knew we loved it and felt totally at home. The fires were so warm and cosy and we loved the two sitting rooms and all the games. The cottage is so well situated and we had many fantastic walks. We have so loved our time in Yorkshire and the fabulous West Cottage. We will definitely be back!" Their daughters Mabel and Elsie say: “My sister and I thought all the rooms so cosy and welcoming and we went on many amazing walks. We love the Yorkshire Dales and this cottage definitely made us want to come back : ) ”
Mr A Young, 28th October 2017
“A lovely week at the cottage. We loved the real fire in the front room and spent many evenings playing games by it. The cottage was very warm and welcoming to return to after a day out. We love the Yorkshire Dales." Heather & Wayne, East Yorkshire, 28 September 2017 "Arrived and felt at home immediately! Many places to visit in the area, but lovely to come home and light a fire. I didn't realise the kitchen would be so well equipped, I really didn't have to bring the kitchen sink. My partner said he could live here for ever! Not one single complaint about this cottage. Will miss it and its special touches. Many, many thanks ”
Mr P Hindle, 20th October 2017
“Lovely cottage and we really liked your pictures and art work. Beautiful garden with lovely views. Great place for a cup of tea. Saw a hedgehog in the garden. Thoroughly recommend this cottage to anyone who likes traditional, quirky, homely, cosy! Real fires for us are a must!! Dog friendly, too, although there are no signs of doggy 'wear and tear', which is a plus for us, so for those who are put off about this - don't be as this cottage is immaculate!! Thanks for a lovely week!”
Mrs H Collishaw, 22nd September 2017
“We only had to be in the cottage for a few minutes to know that we would be very happy here. We are both fond of the arts and appreciated what was on display in the cottage. The house is large enough for me to have been able to practise the trumpet in the lower lounge without, apparently, disturbing anyone. We've had a lovely time. Many thanks!”
Mrs D Williams, 8th September 2017
