Cottage Description

Welcome to Yorkshire Member Yorkshire Visitor Information

West Cottage is an out of the ordinary and spacious traditional farmhouse, full of delightful surprises. Its two characterful sitting rooms and dining room, with cosy fire places and wood stove, provide ample room for everyone to find their own comfortable nook to relax in. The driveway in front of the cottage leads to a lovely secluded garden and a lower paddock on the hill side. Overlooking the dale a terrace provides an idyllic place to sit, reflect and enjoy the view towards the crags of Ellerkin, and eastwards as far as 40 miles to the Hambleton Hills.

Entry is through a porch door to the dining room, formerly the farmhouse kitchen with a traditional kitchen range. To one side of the dining room is a comfortable sitting room with stone fireplace and polished wood floor and ceiling. Off the other side of the dining room is a well-equipped kitchen with stone tiled floor leading down two stone steps to a hallway/utility room with flagged floor, open stonework and exposed beams. This in turn leads to a spacious lounge, with polished hardwood floor, vaulted ceiling, wood-burning stove and views out to the garden and the fells beyond. A low glass door leads from this lounge to the driveway and garden. Adjoining the hallway is a tiled shower room with washbasin and toilet.

A stone stairway which is carpeted rises from the dining room to an intermediate landing giving access to a bathroom with bath, washbasin and toilet. A second, larger landing, serves three bedrooms, one small single room, a room with twin beds and the larger room a double bed.

This quirky and very cosy cottage retains many of its original features such as panelled window reveals and seats, panelled ceilings and doors along with picture rails, stone and oak floors and fireplaces. Period fixtures and fittings, fine artwork and memorabilia are set against a general decor that captures the essence of an early dales farmhouse but with all the modern comforts of life. A unique and truly homely cottage with wonderful views across Wensleydale and great walks just on the doorstep.

Please note for winter breaks there is a minimum charge of 4 nights.

Cottage Reviews

“Thank you so much for a wonderful week spent in your beautiful Cottage! Our first visit to West cottage and we loved it as soon as we crossed the threshold. We loved your artwork and the beautiful garden, lovely for late afternoon tea at this time of year. Our daughter spent happy hours painting views from your garden. Thank you to Sheena for making the cottage so clean and welcoming. We will definitely be back. Kamilla, Peter, Leila, Helena Ratcliff, and Isaac. ”
Mrs K Ratcliff, 21st September 2020
“A lovely cottage, full of character, and a great location. We loved the paintings and sketches, the selection of books and the great view from the garden. The availability of maps was much appreciated. Thank you! Catherine and Bill ”
Mr William Todd, 4th September 2020
“West Cottage in Thornton Rust is central to a lot interesting sights, but situation remote and lovely village. Lovely cottage with special charming atmosphere and interior, space offered, wonderful garden with great view. We love the traditional carpet in the dining room, the antique furniture and displayed art (many pictures and objects). Please do not change anything!”
Mr F P Schuettler, 6th September 2019
“Another wonderful and restorative stay at West Cottage.. our fifth, I think. There have been lots of moments here and there, drinking tea whilst taking in the atmosphere and views of Wensleydale, but the one at the bottom of West Cottage's garden remains a favourite. On our walks around Thornton Rust we have been really excited to find raspberries, gooseberries and white currants growing in the hedgerows. Thanks, Karen and family, for the lovely West Cottage.”
Mrs E Arnold, 2nd August 2019
“Our week at West Cottage has flown by far too quickly! The cottage [more like a mansion!] has everything we could wish for, with lamps, pictures and chairs aplenty. We have loved staying in such a charming and characterful old house, which is very clean, comfortable and homely as well as having oodles of space. The beautiful garden [lovely roses at the moment!] is a dream come true, and we have enjoyed the views across Wensleydale every day as the weather has been very kind to us. We are so glad to have found this wonderful cottage and hope to be back one day! ”
Mr Matthew Wallen, 12th July 2019
“What a wonderful cottage. We have had a great time, the view from the cottage is superb and it has been very nice to sit in the garden and read. Thank you so much for the loan of your cottage. Hopefully we will be back!”
Mr & Mrs J Doughty, 5th July 2019
“We had a fantastic and peaceful week in the cottage. Yorkshire's weather cooperated and breakfast and tea out in the garden was wonderful. We tried to pack the garden in the car, but very sadly it wouldn't fit. We would love to come back again. Thank you!”
Dr Melanie O'Sullivan, 28th June 2019
“This is a delightful cottage, wam, cosy and enveloping.. as two artists staying here we loved all the artwork and spent our evenings creating around the table. We've been bowled over by the beauty of the landscape and would love to come back. Many thanks”
Ms A Hughes, 14th June 2019
“Cosy, comfortable [very] and characterful, with the most beautiful walled garden. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home.”
Mrs Andrew Woodhead, 7th June 2019
“I wanted to write and thank you for our lovely holiday at West Cottage last week. Your welcome card was lovely and captured the exact spirit that we enjoyed so much about your home when we visited two years ago, and why we chose to return. We were straight out up onto the fells, enjoying the peace, the birds and the views. What a spectacular place. So many great walking and cycling routes right from the door. Your garden was looking great. I enjoyed my early mornings, when I did my exercises in the new lounge overlooking the cultivated plants with the rugged landscape in the background. I'll always remember that view with fondness. ”
Ms L Barnes-Carey, 25th May 2019
“We absolutely loved your cottage, which far exceeded our expectations. As soon as we walked in we were delighted to see the paintings, drawings and etchings on the walls and liked the fascinating variety of objects and ornaments in every room, the furnishings, the books, the traditional carpet. As we walked through the kitchen and utility room, we were stunned to find how large the back living room was! What a glorious room! Our favourite place to sit, observe and absorb the tranquility all around us, was on the terrace at the far end of your very pretty garden. We sat there as often as we could, drinking in, so we might never forget it, that spectacular view across Wensleydale. West Cottage gave us the perfect base from which to discover the National Park with its breathtaking scenery and we hope very much to return one day. ”
Mrs Carola Attwater, 17th May 2019
