Cottage

Description

Many small streams and becks, with their sources on the low flanks of the Pennines eventually converge to form the River Laver. Here sits Grewelthorpe, a pretty village with a central green, pond and pub. Just outside the village in elevated verdant countryside between the high western hills and the Vale of York is Thorpe House and its associated barns and farm buildings. The Hay Barn is a recent and innovative barn conversion adjacent to the main house with its own walled garden.

Entry from the garden is to a stunning, spacious and very well equipped fitted kitchen and dining area with stone flagged floor, beamed ceiling and wood-burning stove on a raised hearth backed by a Victorian fireplace. Off the kitchen is a large, comfortable lounge with beamed ceiling and polished wood floor. Through the lounge is a bedroom with twin beds which views out over surrounding fields towards Kirkby Malzeard.

An open pine stairway rises from the kitchen to a small landing serving an interesting double bedroom with a skylight, to watch the night stars, as well as windows to take in the views and a beautiful shower room with large shower and sprinkler, washbasin and toilet.

The Hay Barn has been meticulously and lovingly converted with attention to detail and a desire to uphold tradition yet provide modern comfort. The exposure of original features such as stained beams, exposed stonework and natural woodwork embellish the rich character of this unusual home. The cottage stands amid tranquil rolling countryside in the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on a working farm with easy access, even on foot, to local villages and their facilities. It is close to Hackfall Wood and The Himalayan Gardens and within a short drive to Masham, Ripon, Pateley Bridge, Bedale, Harrogate and of course the Yorkshire Dales National Park plus a multitude of other renowned holiday attractions.

A lovely spacious, comfortable cottage. Very peaceful and quiet but still within easy access of local attractions. Spent an enjoyable week here, lots to do for the kids, enclosed garden for the kids and dog to play in was fab.

This was the third year we have stayed at The Barn, which speaks for itself. The Barn fits all our needs: location; dog-safe garden; space; within distance of our favourite Yorkshire places to visit.

Overall the property was really good but a couple of things, albeit superficial, could improve it. There were only 2 chairs in the garden, rather than 4 which would have been nice. There was a bench but this was rather rotten and dirty, as was the outdoor washing line. The shower itself was great but the grouting,/silicone was awful, meaning that the whole bathroom looked a bit shabby. Finally at the end of the drive, where the bins were, there was quite a bit of rubbish lying around. This was the first impression of the property and it could easily be tidied up. All sounds like a moan but given it was 4 stars and given what it costs, I think a few improvements could make a big difference.

We loved staying in The Hay Barn. We had a warm welcome by the owners with a lovely giftbox with treats and a bottle of wine. The cottage has a warm rural atmosphere where everything you need is at hand for a holiday week. A very nice shower, good beds and a very complete kitchen. There is a nice walking trail (4Mile) starting 4km from the cottage. Very beautiful. Also the towns in Yorkshire are a pleasure to visit. Masham is the nearest to the cottage and is a very attractive place with nice shops and pubs.

Lovely country location nice and quiet with good views. Good base for exploring the area. Only down side was the lack of drawers in double bedroom and the small ones in the bedside table wouldn't open and close properly.

the directions to the property could be better, the track to the cottage is very uneven, rough , although we appreciate it is a farm track.

Nice cottage. Lovely welcome pack. Perfect base for visiting Ripon, Harrogate and local villages. Great wee garden for our dog. Track leading to house needs some attention . Disappointed no facilities for recycling yet.

The Hay Barn offers first class accommodation. The owners provided a much appreciated welcome basket on arrival, the accommodation is very spacious, cosy, spotlessly clean and warm. Despite having a very wet week, we enjoyed exploring the beautiful location.

A lovely, quiet location just outside the village but still with access to the Nidderdale AONB and surrounding area. The kitchen/dining space and separate lounge provided ample space for our party of four and the welcome pack was appreciated. The enclosed garden was a useful space to allow our dog access to the outdoors without the need to be on constant watch. One area for consideration may be better provision for recycling of glass/plastics etc. as it was unclear how this was to be achieved currently. Overall a very restful and enjoyable week was had by all.

We have loved our stay here, just what we needed - very quiet location. Front garden was very secure for our dog and also very private for us. We brought our garden chairs so we could recline outside in the sun which was very relaxing! There is garden seating at a picnic table but if you want to relax bringing chairs is a good idea! Inside is very comfortable, nice to relax in evening and kitchen well equipped, good space for eating and cooking. Hosts were great, helpful and also non-intrusive which we like! And they left us a welcome pack which was lovely with essentials and some treats :) Area is quiet, masham was only 10 min drive though with supermarket and petrol. Lots of walking in the area it’s a de auto fill place and lots to visit.

What a gem of a find. This cottage is just outside the village of Grewelthorpe within an hour of everywhere you would want to go like Harrogate, Fountains Abbey, Grassington, Aysgarth Falls, Bedale, etc. The cottage has all the usual amenities but also gave you plenty of room in the good sized kitchen and living room. Lovely big rain shower and spacious bedrooms including one on the ground floor should you need it. There was a lovely garden which we and our dogs enjoyed and fantastic views over the fields with the lambs, chickens and ducks roaming around. We will definitely return, it was great.
