Circular Walk from Carperby

Circular walk from Carperby

Walking in the Yorkshire Dales can be a glorious thing to do and walking from Carperby in a circular manner is no exception. The views are just terrific and as you climb higher they get even more spectacular, across to Penhill and Addlebrough and into Wensleydale. This walk is about six miles long with a short, sharp climb to start with but then quite easy going.

Before you set off do plan your route and take map, GPS and pop your compass in. Please do wear and take appropriate clothing and footwear, take plenty to drink and nibbles and you can also look forward to an excellent lunch, before or after your walk, at The Wheatsheaf in the village. We were there a few days ago, all homemade food and delish with a lovely warm welcome too! There is parking in front of the village hall, donations please, or street parking wherever you can.

If parking at the village hall walk east and at Hargill Lane, OS Grid Ref: SE 00905 89952, turn into here and walk along the lane, past all the houses and the dead end sign, keep going up the hill, soon you’ll leave the tarmac. Continue on, ignoring the track off to the right, and up quite a steep track. Soon you will arrive at a junction of ways, OS Grid Ref: SE 00696 90459, turn left, west. Walk along this level until above Woodhall. The landscape on here is like being on the moon, well sort of, quite interesting from mining in past times. You’ll find lots of different types of stone on here which consequently encourages different wild flowers to flourish.

Once above Woodhall turn left, south, at the little waterfall and proceed down the hill into Woodhall. Out onto the road, The Straights, carefully cross, turn right and take the next turning on your left. Follow the road down and keep to the left where the road forks. Continue along here to Ballowfield coming out onto the road again, The Straights, keep walking east to a left hand junction signposted ‘Aysgarth via Footbridge over the River Yore’ and a couple of houses. Continue down here for just a few yards then left up onto the discussed railway line. Continue on following the markers, through Bear Park and on to Aysgarth Falls. Pause here for a while, too good to miss. Out to the road at Yore Bridge and walk up the path on the left into the wood to the Yorkshire Dales National Park car park. Once in the car park look out for markers to again take you to the left. Continue on here through the wood and through the open tunnel where the railway bridge used to be and out into open fields. Again follow the footpath signs to the road. Over the road to the turning on the right, Low Lane, and choose whichever path you would like to walk back to Carperby and your vehicle.
