Books and boots, walks and words, that’s how it’s described by the organisers and how appropriate. Enjoy glorious walking, exploring, illustrated talks, workshops………… This will be the twelfth annual Richmond Walking and Book festival, this year from 24 September until 2 October, and it seems to grow and be more diverse each year. New for this year will be the 5-day Wensleydale Medley walks, of course, living in Wensleydale, I’m completely biased, but these look to be wonderful walks to join in with, you won’t have to bother getting lost (if that might be the case sometimes!) and you’ll no doubt be given some of the history and things to look out for on the way.

Or meet in Richmond and explore the historic streets with all its nooks and crannies, there’s even a ghost walk! Visit Altberg Factory joining Mike Sheehan, the owner, who will delight in showing you how his boots are designed and made for walking, the army and biking. Time for a quick cuppa here and then off to Willance’s Leap to hear all about the famous legend of Robert Willance’s tragic fall and the horse who saved his life.

Professor Joann Fletcher of the University of York, now famous for her TV appearances, will be giving a talk at Richmond School, for Charlotte Bronte fans, join historian Juliet Barker the acclaimed biographer of The Brontes. Chat to Frances Brody, author of A Death in the Dales, her seventh book featuring amateur detective Kate Shackleton.

These are just a small taster of what’s happening at this wonderful event which just leaves me to say come and join us and stay in one our holiday cottages in the Yorkshire Dales, if you haven’t booked already, so that you can enjoy all the festival has to offer. Do give us a call on 01969 663559 for friendly help and advice about our Yorkshire cottages or search and book online.
