It’s coming up to Christmas and our ladies walking group thought it would be a nice idea to gather together for the last walk of the year and to finish with lunch afterwards. The plan was to park at the Wensleydale Creamery, if possible, other parking nearby if no spaces, walk for about three miles or so and return to the Creamery. So on a beautiful winters morning we parked as instructed and set off from the Creamery.
Turn left onto Gayle Lane and walk along the roadside for just a little way, soon you will see a finger post directing you to the left along the Pennine Way. Take this path, it’s a flagged pathway so you can’t miss it, and continue along until you come down into Hawes. Lovely views along here especially as the church is coming into view. Once amongst the houses continue down onto the cobbled road in Hawes and turn left. If you feel like it there’s time to browse the shops, why not? Keep going right through the town, past the petrol station, to the next junction, turn right. There is a footpath all along here so do keep to the path. You are now on the B6255, keep going up the hill, past all the houses, ever upward, until you eventually come to Mossy Lane marked by derestricted signs. Turn into here and follow the single track road to High Bands and Low Bands. At Low Bands take the footpath on the left up through the fields, quite steep up here, coming out on Gaudy Lane. Again turn left, you’re back on the Pennine Way, and when you get to the junction of Mossy Lane, walk right for a little way and continue on the Pennine Way and follow down in to Gayle and then down to the Creamery.
Now for something a little easier, lunch, or whatever, in nice surroundings and don’t forget to try the cheeses in the tasting room and pick up your favourite to take home with you! Lots of things to tempt you in the shop too!! Don’t fancy the Wensleydale Creamery? You’ll find pubs/restaurants/cafes in Hawes.
As always, even though this is a short walk, please plan your route, take the map, wear suitable shoes and clothing and, of course, as always, enjoy!
